Forney Independent School District Still Hiring School Bus Drivers

Training is Available for New Drivers

Sherri Thornhill
The Forney Independent School District is still hiring school bus drivers and wants to get the word out to potential applicants. This is an opportunity to work part-time but still get very affordable health care insurance. It's a perfect job for stay at home moms or dads with kids in school, or those who are retired but would like to supplement their income.

If you already have your Class B Texas Drivers License, all you need to do is stop by the Transportation office located behind Warren Middle School on S. Bois D'Arc (you will see a parking lot full of school buses) and fill out an application. You should ask to speak with Carla Davis if you have any questions about the position. There are immediate openings available.

If you do not yet have your Class B Drivers License in Texas, you can still fill out an application for Forney ISD at the Transportation office. Ms. Davis will arrange for you to ride with a driver to learn how to drive the school bus and they will give you the material you will need to study to pass the written drivers license exams. There are 6 written tests you must take and pass before you take your actual drivers test.

You can take the written tests one at a time or all 6 in one day if you like. Most people take 2 or 3 tests at a time but it is up to you. The written and driving tests will be taken at a Texas Department of Public Safety office; usually FISD drivers take the test at the office in Terrell. Most of the written tests consist of 30 questions and you will need to score at least 80% on the written tests.

Once you pass your written tests, you will make an appointment to take your driving test. The Forney ISD Transportation Department will arrange to have a bus available for you at the testing site for you to use during the test. By the time you take your driving test you will have had plenty of practice with a Forney ISD driver who will show you exactly what you need to be able to do to pass the test.

If you pass your written and driving tests, you will take a basic physical exam, and a CPR and First Aid certification class paid for by Forney ISD. You will also take a 20 hour course in Crisis Prevention and a school bus driver safety training course. All courses are paid for by Forney ISD. During this time, your application will be used to conduct a background check on you. A credit check is not done nor needed. If you are hired by Forney ISD they will have you come in for finger printing and to take a picture for your Transportation Department badge.

Forney ISD bus drivers are paid per route and you will normally have 2 routes in the morning and the same 2 routes in the afternoon. The pay per route averages $13-$20. Most bus drivers work a total of 3-4 hours a day on their routes. Besides good health insurance, dental insurance is available as well as eye care insurance. Forney ISD bus drivers have holidays off and summers off. Your pay is averaged out so that you will receive a paycheck during the summer months as well.

If you have patience and are good with kids, this may be the job for you. It is not an easy job, but it can be fulfilling and the benefits are a definite plus. Forney ISD has many good bus drivers who are more than willing to help out a new driver. The testing procedure and courses may seem like a lot, but you can usually get through the process in less than a month.

If you have any other questions about becoming a Forney ISD school bus driver, you can contact Carla Davis by email at carla.davis@forneyisd.net or at the Transportation office by phone at 972-564-4055. You can get more information about the Forney ISD Transportation Department by clicking here.

Good article, Sherri. I have a friend who has been a school but driver for 20+ years. He tried to talk me into it but I hated riding the school bus as a kid--I really don't think I'd enjoy driving one.
