Fort Greene Park: Danger Zone

You may want to think twice before heading out to Fort Greene Park.

Lately, the police of the 88th Precinct have been patrolling the park in response to nearly ten different robberies all this month.

Much of the crime is thought to be the handiwork of bored Brooklyn Tech High School students now that school is back in session. So, apparently in Fort Greene it's "back to school, back to crime." The school lies on the south end of the park.

The Fort Greene Park crime wave includes several robberies, beatings, and even a robbery at gunpoint. One robbery was even conducted in the middle of the day.

Police have ramped up their efforts and it looks like those efforts are beginning to pay off - they've arrested at least three suspects so far.

Though it may seem a lot for a lonely September, the crime rate in no way compares to the violence in 1990 where there were more than 1,500 robberies in the 88th Precinct alone. In all of 2009 there were only 200.
