Fort Greene resident authors book about Holocaust survivors in U.S.

Over the past few years, Brooklyn has really become one of those "it" places in New York. Apparently, authors love it here, too.

Ghita Schwarz, civil rights lawyer by day and author by night, is one Fort Greene resident who has recently become a published author. "Displaced Persons," Schwarz's first novel, is a wrenching tale of Polish Jews who have survived the Holocaust and relocated to New York to start new lives.

The tale, to say the least, is epic. Starting in a post-war refugee camp in Germany, the story follows the family to the United States and takes a look at their adjustment to life in 1960s America and the subsequent decades. It is a heavy story, but it also has plenty of humor and hope.

Inspiration came easy to Schwarz, whose parents are Polish immigrants who came to the U.S. after World War II. They settled in New York.

Though the underlying ideas for the story came easy to Schwarz, it took years to develop the voice of the novel. She spent her time writing before work and late at night while dedicating entire vacations to the book. Over all, it took several years to complete.
