Fort Hood and Copperas Cove to Observe Moment of Silence Today for Shooting

Lisa Mason
This afternoon (Friday) at 1:35 pm, Fort Hood will observe a minute of silence in honor of those affected by yesterday's events at Fort Hood. Neighboring communities, including the city of Copperas Cove, have been asked to do the same.

It is asked that within reason, you make as many people in your communities and businesses aware of the request so that they may participate if they desire. Schools in the city will also be observing this moment of silence.

The tragic events of yesterday's mass shooting affected Fort Hood as well as the neighboring communities. Schools were put on lockdown and with Fort Hood on lockdown as well, many children did not leave their schools until 8pm or later last night.

Many waited anxiously by the phone waiting for their loved ones to call and still others waited by the TV to see some type of announcement about what had happened. Media confused changed the story nearly by the hour and even those who live on base were unsure of what had happened and all the details.

Residents of Fort Hood housing were told to stay inside their homes and people working on base were forced to stay where they were. Anyone off base at the time would not be allow on the base until the lockdown was lifted which also meant parents who work off-base with children on base were unable to get them after school.

The lockdown was lifted about 7:30pm, finally giving residents of the Army base the chance to go home and those trapped on base the opportunity to leave. All Copperas Cove Parks and Recreation activities were canceled for the evening and the Copperas Cove Dawgs football game was also canceled and will be rescheduled.

Everyone who lives and works in the area was affected in some way even if they did not have a loved one injured in the shooting. Now it is time for the communities surrounding Fort Hood to heal and to continue to support one another through this tragedy. This is why many are choosing to participate in today's moment of silence.

*sigh* This didn't get published when it was actual news due to slow AC review and so many other people trying to report on the Fort Hood shootings (people who don't even live here and are just trying to exploit the incident for a few page views).
