Fort Hood Gunman Alive, Identified as Major Nidal Malik Hasan

Republican Senator, Kay Bailey Hutchison of Texas, briefed Wolf Blitzer on the Fort Hood shooting situation for CNN's The Situation Room Thursday evening. Following Thursday afternoon's deadly shooting rampage at Fort Hood in Central Texas, 12 US soldiers are dead and almost three dozen wounded.

According to Sen. Hutchison, the suspected shooter, who took 11 lives and wounded 31 others before reportedly being killed by military officials, has been identified. The alleged gunman shot at Ft. Hood was named as Army Major Nidal Malik Hasan, M.D. Major Nidal Malik Hasan is reported to be approximately 40-years-old, and an active duty member of the Army. He is actually alive despite being shot multiple times and early reports he was dead.

Early reports on CNN from Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison indicate Army Major Hasan may originally be from the country of Jordan, though this is unconfirmed at this early stage. Major Nidal Malik Hasan, M.D., was a licensed psychiatrist certified with the Virginia Board of Medicine. According to Texas Rep. Mike Conaway on CNN, Major Hasan had served at Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington, D.C. and was currently serving at Darnall Medical Center on Fort Hood.

Sen. Hutchison indicated to CNN's Blitzer that Major Hasan was apparently scheduled to be deployed, possibly to Iraq. It is being suggested Hasan didn't want to ship out as ordered, but no clear motive is yet known.

Major Nidal Malik Hasan opened fire on dozens of US Army soldiers Thursday inside a Soldier Readiness Facility, where soldiers about to deploy go for routine medical care. Eleven people were killed and more than 30 people injured when Hasan repeatedly shot off two likely unauthorized handguns, before Ft. Hood personnel took Major Hasan down.

Two other as-yet-identified suspects in the Ft. Hood shooting spree were apprehended in a separate building from where the attacks took place and the first suspect was shot.

I heard a couple reports to the fact that he's still alive...how can that be after yesterday's news that he died? Oh Jennifer, I have this awful feeling he was part of a terrorist attack but the government won't let us know it because we could appear to be doing religious profiling.

I think people will pick up on his name and put two and two together. All very depressing and disturbing. It's all still unravelling.

The early reporting on this was all over the place...and much of it still is. One of Hasan's former colleagues at Walter Reed was interviewed on Fox--a colonel (ret)--and he said Hasan egaged in frequent diabribes about U.S. war policy, offending anyone within earshot, the wounded in some cases. Hasan hired lawyers, was trying to get out of the Army and his deployment. I wrote about this topic, too, with some difficulty,as you noted.
