The Fort Hood Shooting happened today. The attack at Fort Hood was a shooting at the Fort Hood Military base in Texas near Austin. So far, 12 are dead as a result of the Fort Hood shooting and 31 are injured.

Breaking News indicates that one of the 3 gunmen was killed. All 3 gunmen are soldiers. Why would a soldier stage an attack like that of Fort Hood? The military is experiencing record-breaking suicide rates and has a decreased morale because of multiple deployments.

Still, that's no excuse to kill your fellow soldiers. A military base such as Fort Hood should be one of the safest places in the country to be at any given time. No one - not even a soldier - should be able to get by with staging this sort of attack.

According to MSN, it was not immediately known whether the victims were all soldiers or civilians, but Cone said at least one of those killed was a civilian police officer and NBC affiliate KCEN-TV of Waco reported that at least four SWAT officers were among those wounded.

Fort Hood is currently on lockdown, as are area schools. The FBI is headed out to aid in the investigation, as is the ATF. Lockdown means that no one can leave the military base or enter the military base until further notice.

Fort Hood is no stranger to violence. In 2008, a 21 year old soldier shot and killed his lieutenant before killing himself. The Fort Hood shootings that happened today were much greater in scope, but still tragic.

Victims were shot inside the Soldier Readiness Processing Center, and the Howze Theatre. The Soldier Readiness Processing Center is where soldiers go up to two months before they are deployed to get various vaccinations and the like.

The Fort Hood shooting is a harrowing event that will change the lives of many families. The whole country is watching in horror as the whole Fort Hood shooting story unfolds. Fort Hood is one of the largest military complexes in the world, and to have an attack of this magnitude happen at this location is simply mind-boggling.

As the situation unfolds, we should find out if the majority of those hurt or killed are civilian or military. No matter which side of the table the deaths and injuries fall on, it is still needless loss of American lives that everyone should mourn.
