Fort Hood Shootings: At Least 12 Dead and 30 Injured

A Look at Fort Hood and Other Shootings on Military Bases

The Pentagon is reporting that at least 12 people have been killed and at least 30 more are wounded from shootings on the base at Fort Hood in Texas. Two shooters were involved in the incident and as of right now 1 has been captured.

The spokesperson for Fort Hood, Jamie Posten told CNN, "At this point we're looking for the other shooter." He added that that they were still trying to develop the information on what the other shooter looks like.

Fort Hood is closed due to the shootings as seen on the Fort Hood website that reads, "Effective immediately, Fort Hood is closed. Organizations/units are instructed to execute a 100 percent accountability of all personnel." The 9 schools that are located on the base were all put under lockdown which means that no one could leave or enter the building. People were also told to stay away from any windows.

The shootings at Fort Hood took place at approximately 1:30. They are said to have taken place at the sports dome on base which is used as the soldiers' readiness area as well as the medical processing office. The FBI is on their way to the tragic scene now and no other information is known besides 7 people are dead and at least 12 are wounded from the two shooters.

There are some speculations that this was a terrorist attack but nothing has been confirmed yet. NBC's Pete Williams reported that a federal official suggests that all early indications from the incident involved "all military, both shooters and victims."

Fort Hood is the largest army base for the United States and has over 40,000 soldiers stationed there. It houses the Army's 1st Cavalry Division and part of the 4th Infantry Division.

This incident marks the first shootings that have happened on the Fort Hood military base.

Although this may be the first shootings that have hit Fort Hood, there have been other ones, although with not this many people involved on other military bases in the United States.

On December 1, 2005, there were 3 people killed in a shooting that took place on a navy reserve base in Fort Worth, Texas.

Just this past May a United States soldier opened fire on a counseling session at Camp Liberty, which is located near Baghdad in Iraq. The soldier killed 5 other U.S. soldiers during this session that was supposed to help the soldiers. Sgt. John M. Russell was said to be suffering from extreme stress being in Iraq and had his weapons taken away but somehow was able to take another soldier's weapon and use it to kill the 5 other men.

The shootings at Fort Hood is a very tragic incident that no U.S. citizen wants to see happen. These are the people who are defending out right and fighting for our country and now they have to be worried about their safety here at home?
