If you are looking for an inexpensive gift that encourages imaginative play, a fort making kit is just the thing. You do not even have to wait for a special occasion to present this amazing indoor gift, but it does make a wonderful present to bring along to one of the seemingly hundreds of birthday parties your children are invited to over the years.
Pack one for your own children to take along on overnight trips to grandparents, both your child and parents will thank you. If you have the room and temperament, a more permanent solution is described below.
What is a fort making kit?
A fort making kit provides all the supplies for making an impromptu fort. Kids love to set up couch cushions, pillows and blankets to create little hide-a-ways, now they can do so without tearing about your living room. The clothespins or clamps attach the sheets to bed frames. Use the suction cups to string rope from wall to wall and then drape a sheet over the rope.
What do you need?
How do you present it?
Package in a bag. You can make a simple tote bag for all the supplies from a pillowcase. Simply add handles, or if you do not sew, cut a series of small slits around the top to thread a piece of ribbon through for a quick drawstring bag. An inexpensive nylon sports backpack also works well for presenting a professional looking fort making kit.
Mini bag. Slip a smaller Dollar Store zippered pouch to store all the smaller items so they do not get misplaced amongst the sheets.
Present with flair. Be sure to label the gift with a large tag. Write, "Fort Making Kit" a list of "What is included" and simple instructions. Make the label as impressive as possible since the kit itself takes a little bit to comprehend at first!
How much does it cost?
A trip to the Dollar Store to purchase clothespins, clamps, rope and mini flashlight and suction cups will cost well under $10. Look in a thrift store for flat sheets and a pillow case and the price can stay under $15.
If you are ready for a more permanent version try the Extreme Home Makeover edition of the fort making kit. Transform your child's room, or the basement into fort mania by screwing eye hooks into the wall in inconspicuous random places around the room. Kids can string clothesline rope through the eye hooks and then hang their sheets.
