Fort Mountain State Park in Chatsworth, Georgia

Fort Mountain State Park is located eight miles east of Chatsworth, Georgia, directly east of I-75 at exit #333 via Ga. Hwy. 52 and passes through some of North Georgia's most beautiful mountain regions. The state parks namesake comes from the mysterious stone fort that runs across the summit of the mountain. It spans nearly 900 feet in a zigzag type pattern across the ridge of the summit.

Some archeological evidence suggests that the stone walls were ceremonial in design and were built by pre-Columbian Native Americans. Some other claims have dated the wall around 1540 and built by Spanish Conquistadors when Hernando de Soto fought against the Creek Indians on his way through the Americas.

By far the most interesting claim-or legend-to who built the wall on Fort Mountain goes to the Cherokee story of the moon eyed people. The legend goes that these people of fair skin and blue eyes could only roam around in the dark and could not see in the daylight. It is believed that this legend refers to Prince Madoc and his Welsh band of settlers who discovered America in 1140, over 300 years before Columbus. This tale became so convincing throughout history, even Lewis and Clark were sent to discover if the rumors were true.

Today, Fort Mountain State Park consists of 3,712 acres of land encompassing the wall and the surrounding forests for all visitors to come and see history and beauty for themselves. Many amazing amenities have been installed since the parks inception including a full-facility campground, hiking trails and even a miniature golf course.

Outdoor enthusiasts will love all of the things there are to do at the park. In fact, there are so many things to do; you may want to spend the night at the campground, backcountry sleeping platforms or upscale cottages to be able to see it all. Prices range from $15 to $125, allowing anyone to choose a lodging that suits their needs and budget.

The over 14 miles of hiking trails are one of the best ways to see the beauty of Fort Mountain State Park. Many different trails wind their way around the summit of Fort Mountain. Over 14 miles of trails range in difficulty from simple half mile nature trails to strenuous nine mile journeys.

But you don't have to be on foot to enjoy the trails and wildlife around the park. An unbelievable 27 miles of off-road bicycling trails rip through the park for unbelievable summit climbs and wild canyon descents.

Horseback riding, boat rentals, swimming, fishing and mini-golf are also some of the many outdoor adventures you can have at Fort Mountain State Park.
