Forty Five Years Later: Father's Day Tears

Little Girls Never Forget

Donna Thacker
Forty five years have come and gone
And still I wonder what went wrong
The little girl left standing there
Wondering why her Daddy didn't care.

As I grew older, I could understand
Problems that grow between a woman and a man.
But still I couldn't really see
How you could just walk away from me.

A little girl wonders if she's been bad
Sometimes she's just really sad.
Others have Daddy's to love and play
I only had a dream of you coming someday.

You may think your reasons were sound
That it was really better not to come around.
I'll tell you that if all of that is true
Why do I continue to think about you?

So many years have past us by
Things you missed...I don't know why
There's family out there I'd like to know
Tons of history, they could show

Roots are important, so they say
But I survived without you anyway
Only to wonder these forty some years
Did you ever shed any "missing me" tears

Tears for a little girl you left alone
To wonder when her Daddy's coming home
I'd like to know what you'd have to say
Did you think about me on Father's Day?

Sad that family breakups carry such scars :)

Very well done piece. It is hard to be fatherless. My dad was physically there but not in any other way. That doesn't work either, unfortunately.

This is very sad and sadly happens to far too many kids these days.

There are so many children that grow up not knowing their fathers or their fathers family heritage. Some say it doesn't matter...my poem speaks up for those who say it does matter. I know many people who have no contact with the fathers family...it leaves them wondering well into adult hood. "Who am I, what is my lineage? what is my medical history?" This stuff is important!
