Foster Mother, Khareasha Pugh, Freed After Two Year Old Dies from Eating Baking Soda

Is There Justice in This World?

Khareasha Pugh, 22, was released this week after being charged in the death of 2 yr old Deonna Green who was starving, and ate baking soda that was left out. Food and water were withheld from he little girl, who was severely underweight, as a "punishment".

Deonna only weighed 17 pounds, when a girl her age should weigh 22-24 pounds, yet the doctors and social workers found "nothing wrong".

According to news reports, the jury found leaving baking soda out on the counter no more neglectful than leaving out table salt.

In my opinion, the real issue here was not that she left out the baking soda, but that she withheld food and water from a toddler as a form of punishment. In a state where spanking a child is a crime, why is withholding food considered okay?

The news reports further state that the only witness they had to Pugh's withholding food and water was Pugh's 7- year old son. Evidentally, a 7 yr old was not considered a credible witness.

Why were the officials who were supposed to be monitoring state approved foster parents not witnesses in this case? How much attention were they paying? Why was the doctor not a witness? The reports do go on to say that this doctor will not longer be used by Contra Costa county.

News reports also state that Pugh took the child to the doctor and told them that the child wasn't eating. She took the girl to the doctor twice, which was in her favor.

The real issues here are that a 22 year old with a 7 yr old son was judged responsible enough to take care of a child - a life.was placed in her care. The doctor who should have seen that there was a real problem, did nothing. And a child who deserved more out of life died in the process.

The reason she was exonerated was due to lack of evidence - evidence that would have been there one way or another if our social system hadn't failed. We failed little Deonna Green.

If a child isn't eating, isn't it the responsibility of her care giver to force the issue? Should a 2 year old be held responsible for not eating?

I am sickened by this issue, and also by how little news coverage has been given to the verdict in this case. Contra Costa County- hang your heads in shame!

Great story! Contra Costa county should hold their heads in shame. They convicted this girl before any evidence was presented. Think about Khareasha Pugh and her family. They were not given the opportunity to grieve the death of Deonna, who was considered apart of their family. Think about Khareasha, who has this tragedy on her mind daily. Costra Costa county should give her a public apology. Her life has been changed forever.
