Four Alternatives to Traditional Halloween Trick or Treating

Malcolm Tatum
Many parents today are concerned about the welfare of their children when it come to trick or treating on Halloween. While it may not be practical for kids to enjoy the same range of freedom as in decades past, there are still ways to make the holiday fun for everyone involved. Consider one or more of these alternatives, all of which can be supervised by trusted adults.

House Party

Throw a Halloween party at your house. Invite all your kid's closest friends and ask for a little help from a couple of other parents. The kids will be in a safe environment and be able to have just as much if not more fun under your watchful eyes.

Block Party

If there are a lot of kids in the neighborhood, coordinate a larger event with several of the neighbors, possibly holding part of the festivities as each of the homes. This approach gets everybody in on the fun and makes it easy to keep track of all the kids, since more adults are involved.

School Event

Check to see if schools in the area are holding activities for the holiday. While this is more common in smaller towns, it is not unusual for schools in mid to large cities to also offer this type of supervised celebration.

Fall Festival

Many houses of worship offer fall festivals as an alternative to more traditional Halloween celebrations. Usually loaded with food, fun, dances, and games, this can be a great chance to make new friends in a safe environment.

Before deciding that your household will skip Halloween this year, take a little time to explore the options. You may find that making there is plenty to keep the kids busy while still allowing you to rest, relax, and enjoy the holiday as well.
