Four Different Types of Materials Used for Greenhouse Frames

D Swain
There are different types of materials you can use for the frame of your greenhouse. Each one offers different advantages and disadvantages. This article will discuss some of the different types of greenhouse frames.

Wood

One of the first common materials used for greenhouse frames is wood. It is very easy to work with, so it doesn't require professional experience. However, it can be expensive and it will eventually break down to the elements. Insects will also be attracted to it. You will need to apply sealants and repellents regularly.

Aluminum

Aluminum can also be used to make greenhouse frames. Since it's stronger than wood, you can use narrower frames to construct the building. This allows you to fit larger panes of glass so that more light can penetrate. Aluminum also won't rot like wood and shouldn't rust over time.

One of the problems with wood is that it won't be able to retain heat as well. It is also a more expensive upfront option. Although aluminum is stronger than wood, it isn't the strongest material available.

Steel

One of the next materials used to make greenhouse frames is steel. Since the inside of the building will obviously be very humid, you need to ensure that it's galvanized or stainless steel that you use. This material is very strong, light, and easy to construct with. The frames will be more narrow so more light can penetrate the larger panes of glass.

However, steel greenhouse frames aren't without their disadvantages. They retain less heat, so your heating costs will be higher. You will also need to treat it regularly or it will rust.

Plastic

One of the last common materials used for greenhouse frames is plastic. It is very easy to install and very inexpensive upfront. These greenhouses are typically smaller or portable designs. They aren't that sturdy and will eventually be damaged by exposure to sunlight.

These are some of the different materials for greenhouse frames. Aluminum and steel are strong, but wood is able to retain heat better. If you need a smaller design, then plastic may be suitable for you since it's lightweight and cheap.
