Jan Peterson
As women, we share many of life's challenges: sexuality, geting older, controlling our weight, depression, the pressures of caring for a family, maintaining a positive sense of self after divorce or infidelity, and dealing with both failure and success. The following celebrity memoirs will touch a common nerve in most women or at very least, promise to be an enjoyable way to escape life over a stormy weekend!

Marie Osmond - Might as Well Talk About it Now
Published by NAL Hardcover (April 1, 2009) Rated 4 of 5 stars by Amazon Readers

In 1979, after leaving the Donnie and Marie Show, Marie had decided to become a secretary and leave the bright lights behind. However over the years, she stayed in the public eye, which she writes about in this new book. She candidly admits her humanness of failed marriage and divorce, challenges of raising a large family, her relationship with her parents and brothers, depression and weight gain, getting older and even her appearance on "Dancing with the Stars"..

Marie has always presented an image of girl next door to her fans. The book has earned praise from readers with comments that the book:

-Recounts childhood battles with weight in a humorous manner.

-tells of her experiences with stars like Lucille Ball, Cher, Elvis Presley, Jane Seymour which give insight into their off-stage personalities.

-Is definately a book for women, NOT men!

Valerie Bertanelli - Losing it and Gaining My Life Back One Pound at a Time
Published by Free Press; (February 25, 2008) - Rated 4 of 5 stars by Amazon Readers

Valerie earned America's hearts as Barbara Cooper in television's "One Day at a Time" and in silimar subsequent roles back in the eighties. Then, almost in defiance of her 'cute, sweet girl next door' image, she became a rock star's wife. Her marriage to Eddie Van Halen at twenty tweaked our interest because of the good girl/bad boy union. Over the years, she seemed to have beaten the odds by having a long and happy marriage in the midst of a Hollywood career married to a hard rocker.

Valerie's memoir takes us to the other side of her life, giving us a glimpse of what it is like to be a child star, rocker's wife, mother, and woman under pressure to stay the pretty, sexy woman the world perceives her to be. She speaks to all women who have felt those pressures while trying to keep a marriage together in spite of a cheating spouse. Readers herald the book to be written much like a friend-to-friend conversation filled with honesty.

Reader's comments reflect that this book is not just for females or fans of celebrities and that her story is not just about her battle with weight . It reflects the mistakes of marrying young, and the challenges of trying to stay married to a drug addicted rock star husband. They say she is "poignantly honest " sharing experiences about her mistakes, weaknesses, fears & insecurities, and not in that usual celebrity egomaniac way..

Kathy Lee Gifford - Just When I Thought I'd Dropped My Last Egg: Life and Other Calamities
Published Ballantine Books (April 14, 2009) - Rated 3.5 of 5 Stars by Amazon Readers

Kathy Lee Gifford became like the beautiful next door neighbor when she joined Regis on "The Morning Show". She dealt with the day-to-day banter with Regis and challenges of overcoming the public infidelity by her famous husband, Frank Gifford and sweat shop charges related to her clothing line. She talks about the realities of aging, bumping heads with other stars, and her creative pursuits. This is the sixth candid book Kathie has written and reader reviews disclose it to be witty, open and a fun read. :

Readers call her writing witty and charming, open and precise. They like that she shares her life with her husband and children in short sequences, which makes for an easy book to ready. It is obvious from the reviews that Kathy knows how to laugh at her self and her life, and many said they laughed out loud!

Maureen McCormick - Here's the Story: Surviving Marcia Brady and Finding My True Voice
William Morrow (October 14, 2008) Rated 4 of 5 stars by Amazon Readers

"Marsha, Marsha, Marsha". Jan Brady's verbally iconic line fully describes what Marsha Brady was to many television viewers in the seventies: A teen idol! Being a child star in a blockbuster show with an almost cult-like followng like the Brady Bunch, proved to be a hard thing to leave behind for Maureen. As most of her fans now know, Maureen McCormick fell into a crazy, drug infested dark hole before she came out on the other end knowing who she really is. This memoir is a road map of her journey from a beloved, "perfect" child star to that of a woman who can finally admit and accept her imperfections.

Reader reviews reflected that they were surpirsed how lost Maureen had become before she pulled herself out of her addictions. They respected her for taking responsibility for her mistakes, instead of blaming others. They reveal that she confesses dark secrets, but in such a way that readers could understand how it happened, and how much it took for her to recover from her poor decisions. According to the reviews, it promises to be a real "eye-opener" that transcends funny stories about her show business career, into the darkness of drug use and promiscuity.

There you have it, four memoirs that support the notion that inside us, we women are very similar, need the sisterhood of female friends, and have the strength to transform the girls we were, into the women we were intended to be. Pick a book and hold on for the ride!
