Four Fun Birthday Theme Ideas for Your Little Girl

Penelope Rain
A little girl's birthday is so special to her. She looks forward to it all year long, so you want it to be as perfect as you can make it. But, the Disney characters and the commercialized figures get old after a while. A pinata alone only goes so far, and specialized parties at most locations get expensive. Get creative and add a bit of pizazz to your sweet girl's special day. Try one of these themed party ideas on for size.

Treasure Hunt

I know, I know. This doesn't sound very girlie at all, but all children have a sense of adventure, and everyone loves to find treasure. Instead of just having a treasure hunt as part of the party, make it the theme. You can buy the little plastic coins at most dollar stores. Scatter these over the tables. Make a "pin the treasure on the map" game in lieu of "pin the tail on the donkey." Go to Oriental Trading company and find lots of treasure ideas in bulk for all the kids you've invited. Make patches out of black construction paper and rubber bands. This would be a good time to bring out all those beaded necklaces and earrings your little girl loves to wear when she plays dress up.

Of course, if you're going to have a treasure hunt themed party, you'll need an actual treasure hunt! You can find several fun toys at the dollar store or, again, at Oriental Trading Company. Make a homemade treasure map of your yard and mark where the hidden treasure is on the map. Make enough copies of the map for every child there. You could even give it a twist of history, and pretend that your daughter is Queen Isabella from Spain sending out adventurers to find treasures in the "New World."

Tea Party

A "tea party" party is so much fun! You can go to the thrift store and find several used tea cups and saucers. Bring them home and clean them very well in hot water (or, if you can, put them in the dishwasher). It's even more fun if every little girl that goes to the party gets to go home with her own cup and saucer.

Dress up the table with a pretty table cloth, place mats, fresh flowers, and a candle. Serve a plate of yummy fruit, cupcakes, or cookies. There are many different kinds of herbal teas available at the grocery store like Peppermint, Lemon, Chamomile, Green Tea, and even Blueberry White Tea.

Dress Up Party

This actually could go right along with the Tea party idea. Provide several different options for the little girls coming to change into. You can get these very inexpensively at the thrift store if you don't have at home, or not enough. Things with sequins, silk (or fake silk), long flowing things, high heel shoes, taffeta, and fluffy skirts all work really well and are big crowd pleasers. Pull out those old pieces of costume jewelry, funky hats, and sun glasses.

Make it really memorable and take lots of pictures. Have a fashion show for your girls in their new looks.

Art Party

An art party can be a lot of fun and doesn't have to be a big mess. Lay down lots of newspaper where the artwork will be made, or take the whole thing outside if you can. You can do this in many different ways. You can get a large roll out sheet of paper and get some tempera paints and paintbrushes and let the girls go crazy. Or, you can get poster board and inexpensive sponges and let the girls cut shapes in the sponges and sponge paint their posters. There are art kits for kids to paint that are inexpensive: things like flower pots, animal sculptures, or little houses.

You can decorate the tables with white paper table cloths and put markers, coloring pencils or crayons in pretty containers and let the girls paint their own place mats.

For the really daring parent, you can even have a second birthday cake or several cupcakes that the girls get to decorate themselves with sprinkles, icing, nuts, or whatever you can think of.

These are all fun and simple parties you can throw for your little girl, and it's even fun to mix them up. Your daughter's friends will leave your parties raving about how much fun they had and hoping their parents will throw them a party just as fun!
