Chalk
Let your kids make their own chalk with DIY instruction from Wondertime.go.com. Then teach your kids how to play hopscotch, draw flowers, trace objects and so on. If there is no place for your kids to draw with their homemade chalk, buy them a few chalkboards from a resale shop or turn an old kids table, in need of TLC, into a chalk table by painting it all over with chalk paint. You can do this with any object you wouldn't mind painting with chalk paint so they can draw on.
Bug Race
Have each child find a bug. Set up a platform (could be flattened cardboard, a table or whatever. Draw a finish line with chalk near the end. Then let each child release their bug or critter and the word go. Make sure to take pictures as they jump up and down and scream at their bugs to move, jump, hurry crawl, etc. The kid with the winning bug gets to eat the bug. No, just kidding, but make sure to have the camera ready again to snap a picture of their faces when you tell them that. After the race remind the kids to let the bugs go, if they haven't already escaped.
Human Race
Let your kids race. You make the rules, you say go and then they do all the hard work racing across the yard and competing against each other. Kids are competitive by nature so including a race or two or three into the backyard fun is only natural. Now, if you want to practice what you preach about healthy living you might want to join a race or two just so your kids can see that you also practice what you preach. Lead by example.
Frisbee
Playing Frisbee can be a lot of fun for the whole family. It is simple game to play and all it requires is a Frisbee. On Squidoo there is a great Frisbee beginner's guide lens to follow if the kids don't already know how to play Frisbee or wish to learn how to play a little better.
Whatever games your kids decide to play outside make sure to help your kids remember to stay hydrated and try not to let them play outside during the hottest times of day. Early morning and evening are usually the best times. Have a great summer.

Post a CommentGood suggestions... I found out, though, that it takes a bit of water to clean the chalk off... otherwise, it gets tracked into the house! We try to watch our water use, too.
