Four New Horror Movies You'll Never See in Theaters (And Why)

Ayanna Guyhto

Calling all horror movie buffs. Don't give up yet. As film directors are still desperate to scare audiences, they keep cranking out horror movies. Some look so creepy that you can't wait to see if they live up to their trailers. Others---ehh, not so much. Here are four new scary flicks that you'll never see on the big screen.

"The Shrine"(release date: July 15, 2011)
Why You Won't See It:
It's probably too good for theaters.

It never fails that the best horror films you see are often the ones not advertised in the mainstream. These are the little nuggets of goodness stumbled upon as you're web crawling at 2am. "The Shrine's" trailer is sprinkled with all the finest elements: possessed people, cults, scary statues, torture scenes, and the whole nine. And it's for that reason that this movie's July release will remain a whisper.

"The Task"
(release date: July 26, 2011)
Why You Won't See It: "
Go straight to DVD, do not pass Go."

Unfortunately, if you didn't catch this movie in theaters in January 2011, then you'll never again have the chance, as it's headed straight to DVD. "The Task" is a film about a group of contestants on a reality TV competition, charged with spending the night in an abandoned prison. You can already see where this is headed.

"Dream House"(release date: September 30, 2011)
Why You Won't See It:
You're not sure it's worth the ticket price.

Check out this starting line-up. Naomi Watts, Daniel Craig, Rachel Weisz, Elias Koteas. These names are practically synonymous with horror and suspense. Their mere presence in the same film almost seems like horror movie overkill. But then you consider the storyline. Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz play husband and wife (coincidence?) who move to a home in New England. The action picks up once they discover that some of the previous residents were murdered. Since this story can take any number of turns at this point, we'll stop here. Will you make the sacrifice and shell out bucks for a theater ticket? You won't. But you'll be dying to.

"Don't Be Afraid of the Dark" (release date: August 26, 2011)
Why You Won't See It:
It's just too good to be true...

This movie, which stars Guy Pearce and Katie Holmes is one of the few horror films to be break out of the PG-13 box. "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark" is a remake of the 1973 made-for-TV original. But with Matthew Robbins and Guillermo del Toro holding the reins on this one, you can expect a few creeps. The only problem is that similar to seeing Cameron Diaz in "The Box," you might have a hard time connecting Katie Holmes to such an intense production. But then again, after watching the super-creepy trailer, you'll want to give her, and Guillermo's sublime vision, the benefit of the doubt. Ultimately, you'll be just too confused to take the chance on seeing it at the theater. Netflix, it is.
