First, discontinue any liquid consumption at least two hours before bed. This remedy allows the body time for liquids to run their natural course. Bladder pressure is reduced when there is less liquid. Less pressure means a greater ability for some children to control and reduce bedwetting.
Second, make sure the child uses the restroom before going to bed. This may need to be done over a longer period of time to ensure that the habit is formed, and the bladder becomes accustomed to emptying right before bed. Bedwetting is a less likely to happen, once the bladder is empty.
Third, reduce the amount of salty foods in the child's diet. Salty foods increase the desire for water, or other liquids. Salt increases the body's ability to retain the water longer. Larger amounts of water held on for longer increase the chance of that water being released in the middle of the night. If the added salt from chips, snack foods, and other sources is not present in the diet then the body will not crave the additional liquids.
Lastly, some children have nightmares or other traumas in the past or in the present that reduce their ability to control their bodily functions. Children in this situation need counseling and pull-ups. Counseling deals with nightmares and traumas. Pull-ups or other absorbent garments control the symptoms of bedwetting. Shame should not be heaped upon a child who experiences bedwetting. Understand that professional help should be sought and protective undergarments worn. One day in the future the causes of bedwetting will be out grown or be handled. Until that time comes, have a change of clothes and a change of bedding ready. Cover mattresses with a protective plastic or other mattress pad, buy absorbent underclothes, and a large container of laundry detergent.
