Is it what a high heel shoe is made of that causes pain and foot-related problems; or the unnatural shape of the shoe?

Wearing and walking in high heels is like walking tippy-toed, and that is not how our feet were designed to work. Women who wear high heels often put their feet at risk for some serious problems.

We are all familiar with the blisters and corns that result from our weight being thrown onto the ball of the foot. It is no secret that lower back pain is associated with wearing heels; the forward push of the body as you walk in high heels forces the spine to bend backwards. Your balance is off when walking in heels and a sprained ankle could be just a step away.

However, more serious effects of wearing our chic high heel shoes include damage we many not think about although we should. Wearing heels can cause: Morton's Neuroma, Achilles Tendonitis, Hammertoes, Hagland's deformity, and Bunions.

A study done by the American Podiatric Medical Association revealed that 39% of women wear high heels every day; 3 out of 4 reported shoe-related foot problem.

And an APMA survey showed that 42% of women would wear a shoe they liked even if it was uncomfortable; and 73% reported that they already have shoe-related foot problems.

There are some things women can do to reduce shoe-related foot problems and pain.

Alternate shoes, wear your high heels for special occasions, and while wearing your heels take smaller steps and let your heel hit the surface first.

When shopping or walking for any distance, wear some low shoes or sneakers.

Take time to stretch your calf and foot muscles during the day, and at night give your feet a treat soak and massage them.

Ladies do not be discouraged there may be some positive benefits of wearing high heels, in addition to making our legs look longer, our gait sexier, and adding a few inches to our height.

There is some good news about wearing high heels.

Dr. Maria Angela Cerruto, a urologist at the University of Verona, Italy suggests that wearing high heels might boost women's sex life by strengthening our pelvic floor muscles.

Most men find women in high heels very attractive and women wearing high heels feel sexy; high heels have been around for centuries and they are here to stay.

    I wear flats now (used to wear up to 6" heels back in the day). If these new shoes do live up to their name, I may try them. Thanks for the info!
