Four Misconceptions About Distance Learning

Jendayi
Many college and high school students are turning to distance learning to earn their degree and diploma. Distance learning allows students to complete their studies online and receive their diploma. Many colleges offer a distance learning program to their students. There are many misconceptions about distance learning programs such as it's extremely easy and not taken seriously. These misconceptions give distance learning a bad reputation and deceive students who think they can go into the program slacking. Below are a few misconceptions about distance learning.

1. You can do the homework when you want. This is a common misconception. You can not do the homework when you want. There are deadlines that need to met in distance learning education. These deadlines often spread over a week's time but this does not mean that you should wait until the day before the assignment is due to complete it. Many students make the mistake of waiting to the last minute to complete their assignments which results in the student not understanding the material and handing in poor work. Although these students are not in school they still need to study a few hours each day and complete the assignments accordingly as if they were going into school for their classes.

2. It is easy to cheat and get away with it. Students will have to take tests, and quizzes online for their class. These students may think that they can pop open a book to look up answers while they are taking their tests but the tests are usually timed. Students will not have the time to look up every answer in the book. Even if the tests were not timed, professors may become suspicious of a student who took an hour to complete a test that should have only taken 30 minutes to complete. Students are better off guessing the answers they do not know rather than cheating. Those who cheat their way through college will not make efficient employees.

3. Your diploma will not be accepted by employers. The recent diploma mill scams have given online schooling a negative image. There are many bogus online universities that take thousands of dollars from students and then facetiously grants them diplomas. These universities may be hard to weed through but a visit to the better business bureau will allow individuals to review schools for negative reviews. Many accredited universities and colleges across the state offer legitimate online courses and online degree programs. Once a student graduates he will receive a diploma that is similar to the one his peers who have went into school received. There is nothing on the diploma that will state that the student's studies were completed online.

4. Online schooling is easy, is another misconception. This is not true it is actually quite the opposite. Online schooling is much more complex than attending classes in school. With online schooling, students have to be more independent, dedicated, and able to pace themselves accordingly when completing assignments. Online students will not have the benefit of a structured environment. They have to create this environment themselves along with completing their daily tasks which may include working or caring for small children. Online schooling is not for everyone.
