Four Perfect Tools for Applying Foundation

Amanda Furbeck
Perfectly blended foundation starts with the right tools, the right foundation, and good lighting. There have been plenty of times when I've tried to apply my foundations in a poorly lit bathroom in a hurry, only to find streak marks and missed spots later in the day. A sunny window is a great place to start. Next, you need a foundation color that matches your skin tone and skin type. I prefer a liquid foundation with salicylic acid to fight acne and shine. Give a few different shades a test drive until you find the right one. Lastly, you need the right tools to get a great looking finish. Here are my favorite tools for applying foundation.

Fingers. The tool I use the most is my fingers. I dab a little foundation on the back of my hand, and then apply with my fingertips to a small section at a time. I make sure not to use too much (I can always add more if I need it) and blend it really well. Fingers are great because you can feel where the foundation is going. Just make sure to blend well and wash your hand before touching your face.

Beauty Blender. I also like using the beauty blender. The Beauty Blender is an egg shaped sponger that fits nicely in the palm of your hand. It is a great size and texture for applying and blending your foundation. You can use a stippling motion to apply the foundation to your skin and blend it in as you go. The point on the Beauty Blender works well to get around the corners of your nose or in the corners near your eyes. Just makes sure to wash it frequently with the provided makeup cleanser.

Foam rubber makeup sponges. Makeup wedges are great for applying makeup, and they are smaller and more precise than the beauty blender. Makeup wedges are great for getting into corners and blending around the face. You can also cut them to any shape you would like. Clean them well or dispose of them frequently to prevent contamination.

Foundation brush. This is the most expensive option. A good quality, synthetic-haired, foundation brush will give you a lush, thick finish. It's a great method if you need precision or you need to hide a large area of skin. Choose a synthetic version to stand up to liquid makeup and help control bacteria growth. Make sure to wash and dry your brush after each use.

No matter what foundation tools you prefer to use, with a little practice you'll be able to use them well. And while I own all the tools listed above, I still like to use my fingers the best.
