Four Things You Can Do to Improve Your Three Point Shots in Basketball

John Smith
Shooting a three point shot in basketball should only be reserved for certain types of people. Typically, bigger people do not have a great handle on a ball and have a harder time shooting a ball. There are players who specialize in shooting (shooting guards) that can shoot three point shots on command and make them from almost anywhere on the court. These players are very versatile and usually play the 2, 3 or 4 position. No matter the player, each needs cues and tips in order to shoot the ball properly.

When shooting a three point shot, it is very important to use knees. There is no way that someone can consistently shoot a shot without using their knees. It is important to practice this shot over and over again so that one may be accustomed to the placement of the ball in their hands vs. their placement on the court/distance from the goal.

Something that a lot of coaches will teach is the triple threat position. This is where a player has a ball in a stance with knees bent and they can be either able to dribble the ball, pass the ball or shoot a three point shot in this stance.

It is important to start a three point shot in this stance with knees bent. That way they can attract a foul, and if a shot is not there, they will be able to pass the ball off to someone who can shoot. Some small tips that players use when practicing is having someone run towards them while they shoot. This can be beneficial because it can alleviate stress, it can prepare a shooter for a real game situation and it can help the shooter define what they should be looking at when shooting. One can even go so far as to create a hat that has a dangling hand from it so they have to stay focused on the rim during a three point shot.

A shooter should always aim for the back of the rim when shooting. This is so that the ball will have enough arc to go in. If a three point shot is too flat, the ball will not go in, and will continually hit the rim. A ball must have enough arc and be heading for the back of the rim in order to go in on a three point shot.
