Four Things We Could Expect from Horror Film Sequel Splice 2

Summer 2010 brought out quite a few creepy thrillers. It's been a while since the world was treated to a stomach-churning sci-fi creation. Enter the stage, Splice-a prickly little film that both fascinates and disgusts. Sarah Polley and Adrien Brody are colleagues and lovers on the brink of developing a synthesized protein that will in effect-save millions of lives. (Sound familiar?) They run into some "red tape" and their efforts are shut down. But as horror filmmaking dictates, these two embark upon their own research, effectively creating an animal/humanoid hybrid creature, which they name Dren (N.E.R.D backwards.) If you haven't already figured it out (or seen the film), all hell breaks loose and things rapidly go downhill.

Splice does everything it's supposed to: completely gross you out, scare the Bejeezus out of you, and make you distrust the government. In fact, the film's ending leaves quite a bit undone, offering a virtual welcome mat for a sequel. While director Vincenzo Natali has essentially nixed any notion of a sequel in the works, Splice's ending is literally begging for a continuance. So, there is a great chance that you have not seen the last of Dren, the ultra-creepy humanoid science experiment gone horribly wrong. Here's what you can expect from the sequel.

More creepy, amazingly uncomfortable-to-watch sex scenes.

Splice brings us a tiny glimpse of humanoid hybrid porn. That Adrien Brody is a brave man to get on board for this kind of on-screen titillation. While the scenes may seem a bit gratuitous, they are far from irrelevant. What would a sequel be without an extra helping of creepy, inappropriate love scenes?

A movie birth scene like no other.

You can be certain that the "Birth Scene" in the Splice sequel will be unparalleled. Watching any sort of "alien" life form giving birth is usually a pretty sickening site to behold. Enough said.

What have the humans done?

Whether you like to admit it or not, Splice is the type of sci-fi horror movie intended to provoke deep thought. Could man-made animal/humanoids run rampant in the streets, effectively turning on their makers? Why of course! Nothing scares us more than seeing what happens when we totally screw up the planet.

When all else fails, go the 3-D route.

If you've been paying attention, you've probably noticed that 3-D films are making a comeback. Soon, every movie in the world with the potential to become a "rotten tomato" will pull out all the special-effects stops. You don't really need those little red and blue glasses to be thoroughly disturbed by the movie's premise. But Splice 2(or whatever the title) might be far scarier with winged creatures flying out of the screen. Just a thought.
