Coaching basketball can be a very fun, beneficial and exciting thing to do. Whether you are coaching youth, a city team or seasoned veterans, each squad has a lot to learn and need a leader to look to. As a coach, your information and expertise can serve as a role model and inspiration for the team to draw from. Coaching basketball has a managerial perspective as well. It is advisable to have an assistant when coaching a team to take care of administrative duties.

If coaching basketball a high school basketball team, a coach may want to call in the scores and key players to a local newspaper every night. The coach may also need to set up a form of transportation to and from further games. Physical documentation from doctors clearing each player may be needed as well.

To coach basketball, one must be familiar with the rules and regulations of the specific league. Each league has different rules, so it is important to look at the guidebook and see what is allowed. For example, women's basketball has a shorter three point shooting distance than men's. Another example is a children's league may not have such thing as a three second rule inside the key, whereas a youth team may.

Some things to keep in mind when coaching basketball are the defense technique. It is important to note where the key strengths are in your team. Does the team have a lot of tall players? Then you may want to play a zone defense. Does your team have short and fast players? Then you may want to play a man to man defense. It is important to observe these things during practice and then practice the form of defense so that the team is prepared for any upcoming games. The same goes with offense, and which plays/players would suit each game specifically.

It is important to note which game is coming up on a schedule, and what the opposing team has done previously. This is called scouting. Some teams will actually send an assistant coach to spy on a game the week before a team is playing them. The coach will be able to view key players, which players need to be targeted and what defense/offense is played. All in all, it is important to treat each player with respect. Although some players cannot produce the results that coaches desire, it is important to note when coaching basketball that each player desires to be the best they can be. They practice each day, hoping to get a chance to play more than their teammates in order to become a fluent and great player.
