It is important to get properly diagnosed. The only way to do this is to see a doctor. If you always feel drowsy during the day, then you need to discuss this with your doctor. Your doctor should look at your sleeping habits, how much sleep you get at night, whether you get uninterrupted sleep at night, and whether you sleep during the day. A doctor will also talk to you about any emotional problems that may be causing the problem or any medications that may be interfering with a normal sleep pattern. In addition a doctor could order various tests including blood test, CT scans and sleep tests. This will allow a doctor to properly diagnose whether you suffer from hypersomnia or not.
Find the proper treatment for you. There are various drugs that can be prescribed by a doctor to treat hypersomnia including stimulants, antidepressants or newer drugs such as Provigil and Xyprem. If there are other causes for the drowsiness such as sleep apnea, or medications that cause drowsiness there are treatments for those conditions that can be suggested by your doctor.
Get a second opinion. If you don't feel comfortable with you doctor, get a second opinion. Do not worry about hurting your doctors' feelings by going to a second doctor. It is your body that you are talking about, not your doctors. If you don't get a solution to the problem from your doctor then it is time to try something else. Do not just accept this as something that you have to live with. Check with a sleep disorder clinic to see if there are doctors that they could recommend that have more experience people who have hypersomnia. There is nothing wrong with asking questions and trying to find an answer to them.
Find a support program. You are not alone. It is very helpful to find people who have a similar problem and talk to them about it. They might be able to help you find out information about hypersomnia that you were not aware of. They might be able to tell you about a treatment that you were unaware of. Or they might lend a supporting ear to listen to the troubles that are caused by hypersomnia. It always feels better to know you are not alone. Many support programs are available. Check with your doctor or the internet for groups in your area.
