Four Tips to Help You Write a Successful Press Release

Jimmy Collins
Writing a successful press release can be a great way to promote both yourself and your business online. When crafted well a press release can bring you some much wanted attention and hopefully some additional sales dollars to go along with it.

I've been using press releases as a way to garner some extra attention for some time now and the biggest mistake that I witness people making when writing their press releases is going about it as though it were writing an advertisement. A press release has to be a relevant and quality piece about your industry and is a chance for you to show how knowledgeable you are, it shouldn't be about a 50 percent off sale you are having.

The main problem with coming of like an advertisement is that many online press release distributors won't send it out and if they do then how happy do you think someone will be when they think they are about to view some news and are instead treated to some cheap advertising? Here are four tips that will have your press release sounding great without making them sound like an advertisement:

1. Newsworthy Topic: Save your advertisements for you newsletters and your website and when writing a press release stick to newsworthy topics. Choose hot button issues that exist within your industry and offer some insightful and witty coverage.

2. Stay Original: When you set out to write your press release don't pick a topic that has already been covered thousands of times. Simple regurgitation of other people's stories offers no insight and will probably not be read. Find something to write about that nobody has touched on yet.

3. Solve a Problem: A great way to approach a press release is thinking of it as your chance to solve a problem. To find the problem to solve simply go online and check out the chat boards of whatever industry you are in and see what is perplexing people. If you can come up with a solution to a well talked about issue then your press release is sure to gain more than its fair share of views.

4. Keep it to One Page: Don't get too drawn out with your press releases. Remember, that people as a whole are generally impatient. No one wants to read a book so try keeping your press releases short and to the point and if you can keep them to one pagers.

Once your press release is complete and you are ready to submit it to the different online media outlets for dissemination you need to be sure that it is in the proper format. Be aware that there are several ways in which various disseminators will want the press release to be formatted and if not submitted in the correct manner, your press release will never go out.

Press releases can effectively help you in your quest to market yourself and your business online. So long as you stick to writing quality pieces, keep them short and sweet, and make them engaging to read, then you are sure to enjoy press release success.

Excellent advice! I like to add a teaser paragraph at the top of my press releases that makes readers think they are about to read a feature...which they basically are, in a way. :-)
