Four Tips for Making Greenhouse Benches

You may not be able to control the temperature accurately if the plants in your greenhouse are growing on the ground. Greenhouse benches help deal with this problem in addition to preventing strain. If you want to make your own, there are a few things you need to know. This article will give you a few tips for making greenhouse benches.

Height

When making greenhouse benches, it's important to consider their height. You need to take into account the average height of the containers you'll be working with. It's best that your bench isn't taller than 36 inches. Any taller, and you may have trouble working with all of your plants.

Also, the support structures of the bench should be about a foot back from the edge. This will provide you with adequate space to put your knees.

Material

Another thing to consider when making greenhouse benches is the type of material used. Wood is a very common choice, but it needs to be able to resist the humid conditions of the greenhouse. Some of your best choices include redwood, cypress, teak, locust, and cedar.

If you don't use a decay-resistant wood, it will warp over time. Another material you can use to make your greenhouse bench is aluminum. It has the benefits of being very sturdy and requiring no maintenance.

Layout

It's very important that you consider the layout of the building when making greenhouse benches. You need to take advantage of all of the space available. You can make a bench that runs the length of the greenhouse. You can also construct various benches that run from the center to the side of the building to maximum space efficiency.

Circulation

Greenhouse benches should have an open floor or holes in the bottom. This helps provide air circulation and keeps water from gathering. Inadequate circulation and moisture accumulation will dramatically increase the risk of disease.

These are a few tips for making greenhouse benches. Make sure that you don't make them too tall, or you will have trouble working with all of your plants. If using wood, make sure that it can withstand the humid conditions inside the building.
