When committing one of many basketball fouls, it is important to distinguish what type of foul is being committed. If a team is about to lose a game by a layup, and the other team has an opportunity to score, it would be ideal to commit a basketball foul on purpose. This will help the defending team by giving the opposing team an opportunity to take 2 free throws on a missed shot, and hopefully missing one of the two shots.
For trying to reduce the number of basketball fouls, a coach must have control over the players. Based on the players unique talents. If there is a tall player that is constantly guarding shorter players, it would be smart to train the tall player to keep their hands up instead of grabbing at a smaller player and causing a basketball foul unintentionally.
If a player is continuously playing really close to an offensive player, and putting hands on the offensive player yet getting called for a foul of reaching in all the time, it would be ideal for a coach to run certain drills with the player. One such example is creating an environment where the player plays defense with hands behind their back so they do not commit a foul during a game. The same drill can be done with big players as well.
A wide variety of basketball fouls may be committed, but it is important for a coach to note which fouls are reoccurring and which one the coach does not need to worry about. If there is a constant call for a Technical basketball foul, then the coach needs to get the team in order and desist the disorderly conduct. If the team is constantly getting called for basketball fouls resulting in free throws, then the team needs to practice defense inside of the key without fouling.
