Packing
Now that most airlines are charging for passengers to travel with luggage, many people are trying to travel with less. When you are headed to a cruise ship, it may be worth forking over the added fee for a full size bag. Most cruises come with dress codes- meaning you will need a least one formal outfit for dinner. You will also need swimsuits, day clothes, semi-dress clothes and casual dinner wear. Before you pack, check the cruise lines requirements and then pack more than you think you'll need. There's nothing worse than realizing you forgot something when you're out to sea.
The Room
Cruise ships offer several levels of rooms from the economy bunker to the deluxe suite. While those suites may seem appealing when you're surfing the cruise ship website in the middle of the night- stop and think about it before you book. In all likelihood, you won't spend enough time in the room to warrant the extra cost. If you can't stand the idea of bunk beds or enclosed spaces, go for a midrange room, otherwise- choose the economy stay.
Excursions
Depending on the length of the cruise, you will make one to five stops (or even more in some cases.) Every stop you make will be in a tourist area full of different excursion trips for the whole family. You can see Hell in Jamaica, swim with stingrays in Key West or take a guided bus tour of Cancun. These excursions add to the value of your trip, especially if you have children with you, and you shouldn't cut them out entirely. Instead, book your tickets ahead of time online. You can typically find them much cheaper than what the cruise ship will offer.
Spending Money on the Ship
As soon as you get on board, someone will show you the special card all the cruise ship lines use as a payment method at the bars, spas and shops. These cards link to your regular credit card and people can get carried away while on board. Plan to spend money on the ship. You'll probably spend at least a day at sea and every night. Eventually you are going to want a drink from the bar or a facial at the spa. If you are worried about spending too much, set a daily budget for yourself and stick to it.
