Bait
You will need to bait groundhog traps in order to attract your target. They eat virtually anything ranging from carrot tops, apples, corn, and melon vines. You could also try baiting the trap with beans or cucumbers.
It is best to bait the trap for a few days without actually trying to trap the animal. He will become accustomed to eating out of the cage. After a few days, you can set the trap to catch him.
Location
It's very important where you place groundhog traps. The best location is right near their hole. They love the safety of the hole and won't have to wander too far away in order to get food. The trap should be placed no more than ten feet away from the hole.
Time
Groundhogs are active during the night and sleep below ground at night. With this in mind, you should set groundhog traps late in the evening. This way, the animal won't notice it. When he gets up in the morning to eat, you'll have a higher chance of catching him.
Season
Groundhog traps are best used during very late winter or very early spring. During these seasons, there isn't much food for the animals to eat. Therefore, they'll probably be more attracted to the bait inside your trap.
These are a few tips for using groundhog traps. It's best that you place the unit no more than ten feet away from his hole, so he doesn't have to wander too far. Also, if you use the trap during late winter or early spring, the animals will probably be more drawn to your source of food.
