Skunks can cause a lot of damage to your landscape. They can even transmit diseases to your pets. If you want to trap and remove one of them from your property, there are a few things you need to keep in mind. This article will give you a few tips for using skunk traps.

Placement

It's best that you try to locate the skunk's den if you can. They typically find homes beneath structures such as decks, sheds, or even houses. If you spot the animal, you can try to follow it home to see where you need to place the trap. You should be aware that skunks are nocturnal, so you'll need to be on the lookout at night.

Bait

Once you have decided where you need to place your skunk trap, you will need to decide what to bait it with. You will find it easier to catch one if you use a food with a strong odor. Two examples include tuna and sardines. You can also bait the trap with nuts and berries.

Depth

The depth of your skunk trap should also be taken into consideration. The animal will need to get its tail in the air in order to spray. Therefore, the height of the trap should be limited to keep it from raising its tail. If you come up on a trapped skunk don't make any sudden movements or you may scare it into spraying.

Transport

Once you have caught a skunk in the trap, you will need to relocate it away from your home. While transporting the animal in the cage, it's best that you cover it up with a bag or sheet. This will help keep it calm so it doesn't spray. Also, make sure that you don't rattle the trap too much during transport.

These are a few tips for using skunk traps. It's best that you place it as close to the den as possible. Also, you should bait it with foods that have a strong odor such as tuna or sardines. The depth of the trap should also be limited to prevent the skunk from raising its tail and spraying.
