With a record number of birth control products hitting the pharmacy scene like clockwork, it is important for women to take a step back and evaluate all of their options. For example, did you know birth control can be done without taking any kind of pill or medication? Along with the increase in population in the last few years, many have pushed for birth control. Today, there are four primary types of birth control - hormonal, barrier, sterilization, and calendar.

One form of birth control is hormonal. It blasts the fertile hormones in the body and reverses the cycle of pregnancy to prevent eggs from being developed. Hormonal birth control is aided through the use of birth control pills and skin patches. In addition to dodging babies, hormonal pills help to relieve its women of pain and cramps during their periods. The downfall to the hormonal methods is that you have to become a virtual slave to taking medications at the same time each day. One simple mishap or relapse can get you pregnant in a hurry. In addition, hormonal products do not prevent against sexually transmitted diseases. Always consult with your doctor to see if your birth control pills can have adverse reactions to other medications you are taking.

The second, most popular type of birth control is barrier. Condoms, dental dams, sponges, and other items are used to prevent pregnancy. Today, there are condoms on the market that come with spermicides which help kill sperm. Unlike the hormonal method, condoms and dental dams are the best ways to prevent sexually transmitted diseases like herpes and AIDS.

One interesting, not-so-common type of birth control involves taking the risk of having unprotected sex. The calendar method asks that a woman figure out her most fertile periods of the month. After this, a couple would have to show some savvy by choosing the right days to have unprotected sex. Of course, this is risky and involves keeping an eye on the calendar at all times. One or two days, tops, is when a woman is least fertile. The fourth and last type of birth control is sterilization surgery. This is an operation done by surgeons to mothers who do not need another baby! Vasectomies and tubal litigation surgeries are the most common, and are best reserved to older couples or those with nine children. See which type of birth control is right for you today for better, safer sex tomorrow.
