The winter holiday season is a time of year when you might want to spoil yourself even as you spend a lot of time and preparation giving tokens of love and friendship to others. This article takes the approach that you can make adjustments to your lifestyle to scare up the extra money for those indulgences that will help to make your holiday season extra special.

If you have a love affair with Christmas or Hanukkah and all the respective trimmings, there is no reason you shouldn't be able to afford to buy what your heart desires. Here are 4 ways to save money during November and December so that you can have fun and take advantage of your favorite spending opportunities this season.

1. Cut down on the expenses of fast food and dining out. Although you may have to go out occasionally during the holiday season, if you can give up your weekly dining allowance, you can afford to make more purchases on holiday trimmings. Think about the benefits of skipping Starbucks, McDonalds, and the Friday night hangout.

2. Cancel your gym membership. If you are determined to keep going to the gym, you can take advantage of another gym special in January. For a tight budget, this option can give you a hundred or more dollars for holiday trimmings.

3. Economize on your grocery bill. Many people spend extra money on brand name products at the grocery store. If you want extra money, buy the store brand of staple foods like bread, paper products, meat, detergents, canned goods, macaroni products, sauces, and condiments. You can also skip the pricier items on your list such as deli and bakery treats.

4. Stop buying clothes for two months. If you normally spend some of your budget on clothes, you can skip this expense until after the first of the year. Use your clothes budget for holiday purchases on home decorations, cooking, and gift-giving. The exception to this strategy is if you find a sweater that you just have to have for the holiday party.

Have fun this holiday season. It might be the only time of year when you can give up some creature comforts to afford everything on your list. This time of the year it is okay to indulge yourself more than a bit. After all, Christmas and Hanukkah only come once a year.
