Fox Angers Fans Who Had to Record American Idol
Fox Goes Overtime and Angers TIVO Viewers
Why does a program controlled by a network go past the allotted time?
Fans realize its Fox's network and they can do what they want. However, when people are not available to watch it they will record it for later. They set the program to record for the allotted time. Only to find out the program went over.
Why should this ever happen to a TV show that is not a sporting event? If it was the Super Bowl or something than viewers would know to set the recorder for an extra hour. Fox had complete control there were no referees or instant replay to content with. There were a lot of commercial breaks and a numerous celebrities to make appearances.
Was there too much fluff? Considering at 10:03 EST (2 hours and 3 minutes after the show started) they are finally making the award. Viewers got home to watch the results and found that part cut off. This just poor planning by a network.
The program had many celebrities making appearances plus all the past idol winners sang. What will happens in season 10 if all 9 past idol winners must sing. The program could last like the academy awards. Is all of this necessary?
Scanning the idol boards fans speak out against the long programming only to have the results go into the third hour. Those who were expecting to watch the entire programming on their VCR or TIVO were highly disappointed.
The last question to consider does the extra programming improve ratings? That no one will ever know until the numbers are posted. If this kind of thing become the normal fans may just turn on their TV's last few minutes of the hour and pick up the final few minutes.
Over all Season 6 was a success with over 100 million people voting for the final two contestants. The was no real winner or loser for both contestants life will change drastically in the next year. Fans just hope they improve their programming efforts for future seasons so that this kind of thing is not repeated. No one will watch a 3 hour idol that they won't do. If Fox wants to continue Idols success they need to start listening to the fans about their programming.
Most Idol fans are already looking forward to Season 7.

Post a CommentSaw this in JFF in the forums and although I just waited to read about who won on AC I have recorded things on a DVR that went over before, so frustrating. Lisa that sounds like something out of a bad movie, how terrible.
That's too bad, but I don't think the network should have to cater to people who might not be home to watch it, I always set the VCR to record a little more, usually a 1/2 hour is a good rule of thumb
I was a little bummed I couldn't watch the very end of the show. I had to catch it on YouTube this morning. I already programmed it to go 3 minutes over, I wasn't expecting it to go 11 minutes over. I got to the part where Ryan said 'and the winner is...' *CUT* NOOOOOOOOO!
I would have been upset, but it's not the end of the world. I do think the finale had way too much going on and it should have been all about business. Great article though.
