Fox News' Brit Hume Calls Obama Administration Economically Illiterate; Mocks Their Lack of Private Sector Experience

Marc Schenker
Remember when Brit Hume hosted Special Report up to 2008, before handing the reins to then heir-apparent Bret Baier? Remember how Hume was always careful to be the epitome of "fair and balanced," serving as a newscaster who wouldn't get into biases with regards to what story he was covering? Well, thankfully, now as Fox News' senior political analyst, Hume is no longer bound by those restrictions and so can let criticism fly with wild abandon. And let it fly he did on Fox News Sunday when he tore into the Obama Administration for being marked by "economic illiteracy!" Going further, Hume also mocked the total lack of private sector experience of Obama and the members of his administration! With the unemployment rate still stuck at nearly 10% and many new hires being temporary, government jobs, Hume was 100% correct.

When even a non-partisan newsman like Hume turns into a fire-breathing bomb-thrower in analyzing the abominably paltry job the Obama Administration has done in producing actual...jobs, you know your economic policy needs way-overdue, serious retooling. Hume's comments were directed at the latest government job numbers from the US Labor Department, which were released this past Friday. Digging through the numbers, a person in the know can easily ascertain that Hume's analysis was spot-on. In fact, one may even wonder why every other analyst isn't also condemning the Obama Administration as being made up of economic illiterates, especially since their abysmal track record in creating actual jobs is beyond shabby.

The US Labor Department report from last Friday showed that 162,000 workers were hired to payrolls in March, which to the untrained, uninformed eye sounds promising, but isn't at all when you get into the exact details. For one, the 162,000 figure has an artificial inclusion of 40,000-plus new "jobs" added into it, "jobs" that must be subtracted from the overall 162,000 number because the 40,000-plus new "jobs" are in fact only temporary, government jobs caused by hires for the US census. Only then does one get a more accurate picture of the scope of the new jobs. Next, the real number of 123,000 also falls way below the 190,000 jobs a consensus (remember that annoying word from all those global warming fanatics?) of economists were expecting for the March period. Last but not least, according to still other experts, the 123,000 number is way beneath the average jobs created per month that the economy needs to lower the unemployment rate. That would be a staggering 200,000 to 300,000 jobs regularly per month!

Considering all these factors in the enormously disappointing job numbers from this past Friday, one should be able to see how correct Hume was in conveying his frustration and disdain towards an administration that looks utterly clueless at creating good, fiscal policy to bring back jobs. To this end, the administration's flagrant lack of private-sector experience-the private sector is comprised of businesses, small and corporate-is clearly the driving force for their failure to bring back jobs at a pace resembling something even half-decent. Ergo, Hume was again 100% correct for centering his critical comments on the credentials of members of the Obama Administration.

A study by J.P. Morgan released a few months ago even supports this mockery of Hume's, as the Obama Administration is verified to only have a measly less than 10% of its members who have actual, private sector experience. Put another way, less than 10% of Obama's administration has ever had a real, paying job at an actual business, a disastrous statistic when considering that these are the very people advising Obama on economic policy! No wonder there are no jobs, and the unemployment rate still seems permanently stuck at almost 10%!!

Kudos to Brit Hume who, again, is not at all one of Fox News' firebrand-commentators like Hannity or Beck and so has nothing to gain by launching this assault on Obama. His critical analysis was merely right on the mark as I've demonstrated by going deeper into the latest job numbers data. Economic illiteracy is a pejorative term that ought to define the Obama Administration in future history books, when said history books write about the 2008/09/10 Recession.

Calculate your taxes as a percentage of your total taxable income for the year 2008 and then repeat the calculation for the year 2009. I'll bet you paid less as a percentage of your taxable income in 2009. Then comes the shocker. See if a 19% flat tax on your taxable income is higher or lower than the taxes you are paying. Also do some rough calculations to determine if a fair tax of 23% will result in your paying more taxes than you are paying with the current income tax for 2009. The income tax may be very unfair, but the alteratives suggested by some Congress members seems a bit worse.

Economically stupid... hello....when will obama quit blaming everyone else and do something to make a difference that doesn't require earmark spending

The housing bubble is the main cause of the boom and the bust, and that was initially heated up by the dotcom bubble, which was a Clinton thing. Then, when it could have been deflated by the bust, Bush went ahead and pushed for faster growth, but got us a jobless recovery - phantom growth. We had a solid decade of froth and bubbles. Who are the real economic illiterates? Bamas main problem is that he's staffed up with neoliberals who still believe in the Washington Consensus, and the times call for Keynesianism.

Personally, if many folks took a look at their state level services and how they changed behind closed doors throughout 2009 to save or alter a buck, during Obama's term, they may be more understanding to Brit's logic.
