Fox's 411: Monroe Still the Top Bombshell. Jolie Comes in Second

Valerie Ferrari
The results of Fox 411's Battle of the Bombshells shows beyond a doubt that Hollywood's Golden Age produced the most stunning sexpots of all time. Only modern day siren, Angelina Jolie, cracked the Top 5, coming in a hot second to the all-time favorite Marilyn Monroe. Here's how the 60,000 votes cast stacked up:

No. 1: Marilyn Monroe, the tragic star who died too young, the stunning calendar pin-up, star of classic movies like "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" which inspired Madonna, who once said: "I want to be a big star more than anything. It's something precious." She's still an icon of glamour and sex appeal more than 45 years after her death. Votes: 10,060 (16 percent)

No. 2: Angelina Jolie, wild child turned humanitarian and good will ambassador, she won an Academy Award for her performance in "Girl, Interrupted," and made major headlines all over the world with her marriages and the women her men left behind. Angelina's perspective on life: "The thought that you could die tomorrow frees you to appreciate life now." Votes: 8,952 (14 percent)

No. 3: Sophia Loren, the voluptuous Italian beauty who didn't always play sexy roles. She won an Oscar for her portrayal of the plight of an Italian mother and daughter during World War II in "Two Women" (1960). Sophia once said: "Sex appeal is 50% what you've got and 50% what people think you've got." Votes: 7,704 (12 percent)

No. 4: Raquel Welch, whose first became famous in the film "One Million Years B.C." (1966), showing off her ample charms as she emerged from the sea. While her beauty was appreciated by many, Ms. Welch found it difficult to be taken seriously as an actress, but that did not stop her from taking advantage of all the opportunities that came her way, such as performing in Vegas, selling wigs, beauty tips and exercise videos. Raquel once said: "Being a sex symbol was rather like being a convict." Raquel is still guilty as charged. Votes: 7,649 (12 percent)

No. 5: Elizabeth Taylor, no buxom blonde she, but Elizabeth Taylor was both a formidable beauty and talented leading actress who began acting as a child in a career that spanned five decades. Few would dispute the allure of the legendary actress, who once said: "Some of my best leading men have been dogs and horses." Votes: 5,929 (9 percent)

Rounding out the Top 10:

No. 6: Grace Kelly, American actress who married Prince Rainier of Monaco and became a real life princess - Votes: 4,043

No. 7: Ava Gardner, known for her stunning looks, "The Barefoot Contessa" and her love affair and longest marriage with crooner, Frank Sinatra. - Votes: 3,646

No. 8: Rita Hayworth famous as the sexy "Put the Blame on Mame" singer, Gilda, in the 1947 film with the same name, Rita married a prince before Grace Kelly, even though Prince Aly Khan was not actually ruling a country like Prince Rainer and the Hayworth/Khan marriage was not a happy one. - Votes: 2,777

No. 9: Catherine Zeta Jones, Welsh actress who is the wife of actor, Michael Douglas. She won an Academy Award for her portrayal of Velma Kelly in "Chicago" (2002). Votes: 1,563

There ought to be a restriction for people who have had a total head transplant, not being able to be a contender.

You're right Susan, and besides where's the other M - Mamie Van Doren?

Great article. I would hardly call Angelina Jolie a bombshell as she always looks like a walking advertisement for anorexia. Bombshells are traditionally curvy as far as I know. It is interesting to see the list, but Marilyn and Sophia are my top picks.

The quotes you put in for the Top 5 are cool. I like Liz Taylor's quote the best.

Betty White needs to be on this list!!!

All eight of the top ten who follow Jolie should precede her, as should some of the next 15, Cate Blanchett, Kristin Scott Thomas and Uma Thurman. But then, whadaya expect from Fox people?

I'm both shocked and offended that Ruth Buzzi didn't make the cut.
