Foxy Shazam and Free Energy Rock the Troubadour

Stephanie Armstrong
Spin magazine chose Cincinnati's Foxy Shazam and Philadelphia's Free Energy as their favorite new artists for 2010 and sent them on a co-headlining tour this fall. I have been a long time fan of Foxy Shazam and checked out their October 28 performance at the Troubadour in Los Angeles.

Hollerado
Hollerado opened up the evening with a surprisingly amazing performance. This Canadian group got the crowd moving and was well received. Lead singer Menno Versteeg announced that it was their first time playing in L.A. without having to sleep on a friend's couch. The band had a beer spitting finale that was both gross and awesome at the same time.

Free Energy
I had seen some of Free Energy's music videos before and was a bit shocked when lead singer Paul Sprangers came out in a hugging velour body suit and guitarist Evan Wells was in metallic tights. It was later revealed that they were dressed up in costumes for Halloween and fans voted on what they should wear on their website.

Free Energy's music sounds like they came straight out of the 70s. Their song "Dream City" was featured in ads for Target and Flip Video camcorder. It was easy to see why Spin had chosen them as one of their favorite new artists. They exude classic rock 'n' roll cool and are just plain fun. It was Sprangers' birthday and the audience sang him Happy Birthday at the end of their set.

Foxy Shazam
This eccentric six-member band loves to put on an entertaining live show and according to mustachioed lead singer Eric Nally, Foxy Shazam wants to be the biggest band in the entire world. The band has had numerous comparisons to Queen, but you can listen for yourself at their YouTube channel.

Nally surfed the crowd a in his red and black, fringed leather jacket while keyboardist Sky White played while hanging upside down on his stool. Eric Nally is known for eating cigarettes on stage and telling playful stories between songs and he did it once more at the Troubadour. The band ended the night with an acapella version of "Evil Thoughts."

Foxy Shazam is signed to Sire Records, a division of Warner Brothers, and released their self-titled album earlier this year. Some of their album highlights include "Oh Lord," "Killing It," and "The Only Way to My Heart (Is With An Axe)." You might have already heard Foxy Shazam without even realizing it. Their song "Unstoppable" was featured during the 2010 Super Bowl.
