FPL Will Soon Show Its True Colors

Informing of Rate Hikes for 2010 and 2011

Juan Trevino
Florida Power and Light (FPL) is now requesting rate hikes for 2010 and 2011, to generate an additional revenue of 1 and 1.25 billion USD respectively, that will allow them to execute the authorized upgrades in their 4 Florida nuclear plants. The rate hikes would also restore its eroded profit margins to at least 12%.

BACKGROUND
FPL is the 4th largest utility company in America. It services 27 states and has revenues in excess of 15 billion dollars. It has assets of more than 40 billion and made profits of 1.3 billion in 2007. The company and its CEO enjoy all types of prizes and commendations, from the Best Corporate Citizen, to the World's Most Ethical Company, recognized by: Business Magazines, Local and Federal Politicians, and the Florida State Governor. The company reports to produce 40.6 GW of which 37% comes from Wind, Solar and Hydro power. It uses a centralized power generation system with huge plants, and distributes the energy using its high tension land cables throughout its grid. 28 GW were produced in Florida using Nuclear, Oil, Gas, Coal and Petroleum.

16% of current installed capacity comes from Nuclear, 42% is natural gas and 5% is Oil in FPL entire electrical network. Wind power is not being used in Florida, therefore, the contaminating energy sources in Florida could as high as 96%, including the Solar projects in Martin Desoto county and NASA.

The Florida Public Service Commission authorized on January 2008 a 414 MW nuclear upgrade to the 4 plants in Florida , and has authorized the construction of 2 more nuclear plants at its Turkey Point power plant site.

FLORIDA SHOULD STOP ITS NUCLEAR THREAT
From a citizens point of view, I believe and support that Florida should revoke it authorization to increase its nuclear power plants. This stop to "nuclear capacity" will allow Floridian families to supply the electricity that FPL needs by their own Solar generating equipment. This would maintain danger, risk and production of radioactive waste at current levels. Increasing capacity of current reactors and adding two more nuclear plants in Southern Florida, only increases the rate of production of radioactive waste, and the risk for a disaster. Although the Nuclear upgrades were already authorized by the Florida Public Service Commission, permission can probably be revoked, specially since the upgrades have not been implemented. This eliminates one of the needs to raise rates.

FPL SHOULD BUY LOCALLY
Instead of creating more expensive Nuclear plants and upgrades and increasing risk, FPL should be obliged to buy electricity from local Floridians who can produce clean energy. Using solar systems and their roof tops, Floridians can supply energy in the same area where FPL needs greater capacity. FPL will need to create a funding program or act as a guarantor to allow home owners that volunteer to produce the energy, acquire and install the equipment. GOVERNMENT CONVERSION
State, county and municipal governments in Florida should continue to make deeper inroads into "Green" actions. Programs that convert traditional lights to carbon reduction lights should become more aggressive, gas stations, malls and all public places should be using carbon reduction lights to save on energy. Stand alone solar panels in remote place should proliferate in the State. All of these actions, would shift work and supplies to the right place instead of enriching the Energy companies.

GOING FORWARD
We hope the bonanza times for the Energy producing companies is over. Citizens today are less threaten by these companies that supply the vital fluid needed to power up their homes. What we need from these companies is the development of the Home Power Generator, powered by the Sun at moderate equipment cost. We need as many homeowners as possible, generating their own electricity using a Home Power Generator based on the sun. We need to produce goods and services without the power cost component embedded in the price we pay. We need simpler more economical life styles.

Companies like FPL, have maintained the threat of the supply of energy for as long as they have existed. It they really wish to be good environmental stewardess they need to stop spending millions of dollars in lobbying, advertising, manipulating public opinion, keeping us in the dark from their true intentions. Making investments in solar plants that generate 100 MW to add to their 42 GW total capacity, is near to nothing, and will no longer do the trick of getting the citizens to believe FPL is a good stewardess. Please see how large power generating plants contribute to world poverty. Please see Poverty and the New World Order

FPL needs to figure out how to dismantle and or replace its huge contaminating Nuclear, Gas and Oil Power Plants. They will probably need to move their business model during the next 10 to 20 years, from one that hurts the environment and its citizens, to another where they provide decentralized Energy Generators based on the Sun. Technologies now exist to use the Sun, which is free energy provided by God and Nature.

  • Floridians can generate the electricity FPL needs, where it is needed, to reduce nuclear danger
  • FPL already has 4 Nuclear Power Plants and wants 2 more in Southern Florida
  • Clean Solar energy generated by home sites can be sold to FPL to strengthen its capacity needs
96% of the electricity generated in Florida by FPL produces green house gases (Gas and Oil fuels) or Radioactive waste. Major Wind Power in electrical grid, is used in other states FPL services
