Fracture of the Penis

Malcolm Tatum
While many people do not realize it, there are ways to cause a penis fracture. When a condition of this type develops, the chances of developing erectile dysfunction or at least sustaining permanent deformity of the penis is highly likely. Seeking medical attention quickly is the only way to prevent any type of permanent damage and restore the normal function of the male organ.

A fractured penis occurs when there is some sort of unusual pressure placed on the organ while the corpus cavernosum is engorged with blood. When too much pressure is applied, or the penis sustains some sort of trauma during an accident while an erection is present, the lining of the corpus cavernosum can rupture. This allows the blood to escape to the surrounding tissue, causing dark bruising along the shaft of the penis. Often, the urethra is also damaged as a result of the pressure or blunt force. When this is the case, blood will usually drip from the tip of the penis.

As the corpus cavernosum ruptures, there is an audible sound that is similar to that of a bone cracking. The pain is immediate and generally excruciating. While the rupture causes the erection to fail, the inflamed tissue may also begin to swell, causing additional pain.

In the event that a penis fracture takes place, it is important to seek emergency medical treatment as quickly as possible. While preparing for transport, it is often a good idea to apply ice to the genital area. This will help to contain the swelling created by the inflammation and also lessen the pain slightly. Taking an over the counter pain reliever such as aspirin or acetaminophen may also help dull the aching as well. However, if the male is known to bleed freely, it is a good idea to stay away from any medication that may cause the blood to thin.

Once medical help arrives, medication to relieve the pain and inflammation can be administered, as well as the blow of blood contained. After stabilizing the patient, he can be transported to a hospital, where measures to repair the damage and restore full function to the penis can take place.

The only treatment for a fractured penis is surgery. When the repairs are made quickly, the corpus cavernosum will completely heal, often with no scar tissue, and the male will be able to enjoy normal erections in the future. However, any delays could lead to deformities that make an erection painful if not impossible to achieve.
