Britain's oldest ship in the nuclear armed submarine fleet is The HMS Vanguard. The French sub is named the French Le Triomphant. There was some damage to the submarines but none of the crew was hurt.
It appears that there was no risk to the nuclear reactors and nuclear missiles but still - what if there had been? And how did this happen? How to two sophistated though perhaps old as in the HMS Vanguard's case submarines collide? What if they had been going faster? It just happened that they were going slowly. Even so Britians sub had to be towed back to the submarine base and had dents and scrapes according to the BBC.
Le Triomphant had some damage but went back to its base on its own. Neither country will say exactly when this happened. I'm not sure why and can't even hypothesize why.
On February 6 France's military said that one of its subs had hit an object under water but didn't say it was another sub! Britain it seems usually doesn't say anything about its submarines' activities but did so after some of the details came out.
That this happed is really puzzling to everyone and many acknowledge how serious this is. One theory is that the radar systems were not on or the subs didn't make themselves obvious to others..
The important question since we are worried about weapons of mass destruction in countries with whom we are fighting and not our allies is how it is possible for a submarine carrying weapons of mass destruction to collide with another submarine carrying weapons of mass destruction in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, the world's second-largest ocean? I would have to ask my physics son-on-law what the probability of that happening is.
HMS Vanguard has 16 Lockheed Trident D5 missiles. France's Le Triomphant has 15 nuclear missiles.
Britain's Campaign for Nuclear Disarmanent is asking for an end to the country's nuclear submarine patrols of the Atlantic.

Post a CommentThanks for the nice comments. We are heading to France very soon. I think they like us better than they used to!
The French can be a bit stubborn. But I like their cheese.
Great reporting.
Well I don't get to them very often. Seems I'd have to wake up at 6:00a.m. and not go to the gym!
