Franchise Review Megaman Part 5 of 6: Megaman Zero

Bruce Bostwick
This is the only game in the entire Megaman series that has Zero as the star instead of X. There were just 4 games made for the Game Boy Advance and this was one was kept short. The time of this would be about 100 years after the Maverick wars and Megaman is right now gone. Zero gets brought into the picture to help save the world but yet has lost some of his memory over the years. The main villain in this series would be introduced later as Dr. Weil. There is no connection that this game is Dr. Wily whatsoever. Consider the fact that Wily was probably presumed dead in the X Series and died of natural causes. It's some other guy that could have either been a descendant of Wily's or just some plain nut case that has aspirations to take over the world.

I think for this approach it's going to be different than the previous articles, as it will tell more about the entire series itself. Humans and reploids haven't been able to trust each other fully just yet. Introductions to new characters that could serve as helpers for Zero are Ciel, who is a scientist and a human. She grows to care for Zero and does get concerned for him. In the beginning, Neo Arcadia was under the rule of what was assumed to be Megaman X at 1st but then as time went was revealed to be a copy of him. What really happened to X was that he became a cyber elf after a long battle in the cyber wars, which happened sometime after the Maverick Wars and Zero was not there at all. He had 4 protectors such as Harpuia, Leviathan, Phantom, and Fefnir. After Neo Arcadia is taken care of and Copy X has been beaten or presumed dead, Zero now is the savior and thought of as the one that can restore the peace between the Reploids and humans.

The story continues with the events after Copy X was assumed killed by Zero and he was walking in the desert with a cape on and some more of those X clones tried to blast him. He was leaving and eventually came back to thanks to the help of the Humans in the Base. There was now being lead by Elpizo. Initially, he seemed to be on the good guys side and was honored to meet Zero but as time went on, it was learned he couldn't be trusted. He destroyed what was X's original body. It was later learned a little about the Dark Elf and was actually the Mother Elf. It was cursed because of Dr. Weil, who has a bigger role in the last 2 Zero games.

Going back to Dr. Weil, as stated before, there is neither any evidence nor proof that this guy is Dr. Wily. Given the fact that the year for this series is either between 22XX and 23XX, Wily would have to be about 300 plus years old. What could be theorized is that he could possibly be a descendent to Wily. He has that evil intention with him and is actually a human. The appearance does in some degree look like Dr. Doppler but no connection other than appearance has been made. In Zero 3, Omega has been resurrected and this time however it is up to Zero to take him out. There was also the appearance of the same 4 robots from Megaman Zero but also the return of Copy X. The difference this time around was that Dr. Weil rebuilt him. At the end there would be something called Omega in apparently was the original body of Zero. It looked exactly like Zero and was more or less a mirror match. At the end of the battle, 3 of the 4 returned except Phantom as he was killed. They came out and blasted Omega and then Zero delivered the final blow. The Mother Elf had returned to normal but said Zero as if she knew who it was. The only logical guess for that would be Iris considering the fact she was introduced in the X Series and Zero couldn't believe what he did after the battle.

The final game of the series is Zero 4 and this time Weil took over Neo Arcadia and the people moved to Area Zero. It was up to Zero once again to be the hero and prevent Weil coming in to take over. It was finally revealed a little more about how he can't die and he isn't quite alive or dead. It was more or less a punishment for his crimes and he could now heal up quickly. He must be either some type of Android or he's a zombie. Those are just mere thoughts on that. It involves Ragnarok, a somewhat similar situation with the Eurasia colony from X5, but nothing too major. After defeating Weil and assuming died, it breaks up and Zero is nowhere to be found. It is assumed that he had died in an effort to save the planet so he died a hero. At this present time, there is no new Megaman Zero game. The series has ended and it has shifted to the next series Megaman ZX.

Onto the game play, there's a new element brought in such as the cyber elves and for the 1st 2 games, skills were earned after performing destroying any robots. After Zero 3, no more of that and the cyber elves stayed. Zero 3 did also mark the final appearance of Megaman X. Weil is currently the only villain in the entire Megaman franchise to be more like a Zombie who isn't quite dead or alive so he's assumed undead or immortal. All in all, it was a pretty decent series and it was one of those short but sweet and not went to making a lot of games like the previous games were aside from Legends.

Part 6 and the epic conclusion is coming up as it will be a discussion over the entire Megaman Series with its own timeline theory and the one makes the most logical sense.
