The theory for is the River of Time theory. It flows like a river breaking off into different dimensions or realities. Each area is as legitimate as any others and only 2 rivers have been noticed. One where there are robots and the other where it is the Internet is being used. To better label this, it will be Universe A for the times with robots and Universe B will be the Internet timeline.
To begin, it will be Universe A that will be in discussion. In the beginning, there is the Megaman Classic Series, pretty straightforward. Each game for the most part follows each other in a chorological order with in that theory Power Fighters would be the last game since it takes place after the events of Megaman and Bass and the Power Battles game. The next series would be the X Series, which is pretty obvious. Think back to the ending of Power Fighters it has a slight hint though not a huge one with Zero being designed. After the X Series takes place, 100 years later there is the Megaman Zero series. A couple items that support this is Zero shuts himself in a capsule for a 100 years leaving X to do battle by himself and the simple fact the now X is more or less a cyber elf. After this series comes the current series out called Megaman ZX. The time for this is about another 100 years from the Zero series and now there are bio metals. The final series in this takes place thousands of years later is the Megaman Legends series.
Universe B is pretty small so this is involving a different aspect considering that there are programs instead of robots and the fact that are virus's on the net and can be killed off through programs called Net Navis. The beginning of that is Megaman Battle Network Series. Why this doesn't follow the timeline is based on the year itself. It is the exact same year as it is in the Megaman Classic series and it would be rather impossible for it to be occurring along the way same exact line as the original series. The next series after this is supposed to take place 200 years after the events of Megaman Battle Network with a new series called Megaman Star Force. That series hasn't come out yet so it's a wonder how it will do.
Megaman, like it or not, will go down as a legendary series. There are other games that they tried to expand on it with Megaman Soccer. That game I've come to the conclusion has really no part of the timeline considering it's just a side game and it wouldn't make sense. I also don't think Megaman Battle & Chase is involved with the series because it's more of a racing game. The best series' out of the bunch would be in my own opinion would be the Classic and X Series. I also liked the Battle Network and Zero series but the Legends one was just too short and needs a conclusion.
