Francis Howell Schools Back in Session Too Soon After Snow?

Accident in Front of School Morning After School Closing

Elle
On February 9, 2010 three car accidents caused from snow and ice factors in Missouri caused 2 fatal deaths of young drivers. With many of the kids, 16 to 18, driving themselves to the High School, the 10th might have been a little too soon to return to school.

As cars were coming to a stop to turn into the Francis Howell North High School, one individual who attempted to slow down hit a patch of ice and snow causing a fender bender right in front of the school on Hackman Road. The turning lane, of all things, was covered in a huge slippery path of snow and ice just waiting for an unsuspecting and inexperienced driver. SEE PICTURES ABOVE

11 other incidents were reported throughout the state by the Missouri State Highway Patrol, including one fatal incident in Gasconade that caused the death of Lance Shoults, 35, of Brumley, Missouri.

There were a total of 30 accident reports from MSHP on the 10th. Safety of our children should come before the loss of ONE extra day of school. That would be my priority anyway. Others may see it differently.

Schools need to be responsible for balancing safety with having school in session. No point in having kids go back too soon under dangerous conditions.

The Francis Howell School District did not have school on Monday, Feb. 8 or Tuesday, Feb. 9. On Feb. 10, when school resumed road conditions were clear, as was the weather. You can't expect the district to keep calling snow days or the kids will be going to school well into June. If you are worried about your young driver and bad roads, don't let them drive. They can take the bus.

That's not a good start for a Monday morning.
