Frank Gore will Stay in San Fran

Running back Frank Gore has agreed to a four-year contract extension with the San Francisco 49ers. The deal is a reward for his team record 1,695 rushing yards last season.

Gore led the NFC in rushing in only his second pro season. He was due to earn $435,000 for the upcoming season. The extension allows the Pro Bowl back to be under contract with the 49ers through the 2001 season. The deal contains more than $14 in guaranteed pay.

49ers coach Mike Nolan confirmed that the deal had gone through Wednesday at the NFL meetings in Phoenix.

"He agreed yesterday," Nolan said. "He had a good day. It's a little early; Frank just finished his second year. But we identified somebody we want in Frank. He's a young player and we wanted to extend it and it's still very early in his career."

Gore set franchise records with the 49ers last season in yards rushing in a season, 2,180 yards from scrimmage, and for the single-game rushing record with his 212 yards against Seattle.

Gore was also the 49ers top pass catcher with 61 receptions for 485 yards and one touchdown.

"He had an outstanding year," Nolan said. "For us, it was not a fluke that he had such a good year. It's not like he lucked into it."

Gore's football career has been riddled with injuries, but he was able to start all 16 games for the 49ers last season. The Pro Bowler played football in college at the University of Miami. He underwent reconstructive surgery on both knees while in college, and also had major surgery on both shoulders after his rookie season with the 49ers.

During his breakout season, however, he was durable and averaged 5.4 yards per carry as he passed the best seasons of former San Francisco backs such as Roger Craig, Ricky Watters, and Garrison Hearst.

Team officials had hoped to conclude their negotiations with Gore before the start of the season, so talks between the Niners and Gore's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, began during last season. Niner officials were at first worried about extending Gore because Rosenhaus said that he should be the NFL's highest paid palyer.

According to ESPN.com, Gore's extension is worth about $28 over four years and includes a $6.5 million signing bonus.

Gore, 23, is expected to sign the contract within the next few days. He was in Phoenix on Wednesday at league meetings.
