Freddy Krueger Joins the Mortal Kombat Roster: The Nightmare Has Left Elm Street

On July 21, the final downloadable addition to the roster of the latest game in the venerable Mortal Kombat roster was announced, and it is a character straight out of the nightmares of gamers everywhere: Freddy Krueger.

According to IGN, the star of some of the most terrifying horror films of the 80's will be the fourth and final downloadable fighter for Mortal Kombat. Available starting August 9th, gamers will be able to add Freddy to their stable of fighters for $4.99 on PSN or 800 Microsoft Points on Xbox Live, if the pricing from previously-released fighters remains consistent.

The downloadable Freddy appears to be based on the modern version of the character, rather than the classic Robert Englund version that so many are familiar with. Freddy appears wearing his customary hat and long-sleeved sweater.

The video released alongside the announcement shows Freddy hacking and slashing his way through some of Mortal Kombat's most famous fighters, utilizing his signature claws, a projectile attack, and a firey teleport maneuver.

His fatalities are true to the character. Those featured in the video showed Freddy sinking his claws into a foe and dragging him down into a firey pit and Mr. Krueger conjuring up a furnace from underground and using his claws to launch a stunned opponent into it, sweetly waving goodbye as the door chops off their arm.

Freddy is the latest fighter to be released as DLC for Mortal Kombat. Previously-released DLC fighters include Kenshi: a blind sword-wielding warrior, Rain: a fluid-fighting ninja with devastating water and lightning based attacks, and Skarlet: a scantily-clad female fighter who utilizes her own blood as a weapon.

Rumors had been circulating that either Freddy or Jason of Friday the 13th fame might appear as a downloadable fighter. Gamers will have to wait for future announcements to hear more about other possible additions. For now, Freddy is the last.

Mortal Kombat was released on April 19, 2011. The Game was developed by NetherRealm Studios and published by Warner Bros. Interactive.
