If you're in the vicinity of Colonial Forge High School in Stafford, Virginia on Sunday nights, you'll no doubt hear the sounds of a choir in full blown rehearsals. Peeking in the doors of the choir room, you can see a conductor directing the singers, who are dancing, singing, and generally having a very good time. And if you live in the area, you'll soon be able to enjoy the fruits of the Stafford Regional Choral Society's efforts by attending their annual spring gala on April 17th in Fredericksburg.

Begun in 1999, the Society's mission is "t o promote music and the arts in the greater Fredericksburg area. We offer concerts to the community, and scholarships to local high school seniors who wish to pursue music studies at the college level." The Society is made up of volunteer vocalists and professional musicians. Last year, as part of their annual Christmas concert, they introduced the new children's choir, which has formed as a branch of the Society.

The annual gala is the Society's only fundraiser, and is followed by two free concerts in the summer and at Christmas. With the proceeds of the gala, the Society will give scholarships to students who wish to pursue music studies in college. Last year, the Society was able to award three scholarships totaling $2000 to area students, and provide a significant donation to the Semper Fi Fund to help wounded veterans.

This year's gala theme is Going on a Sea Cruise. Guests will be treated to an evening of island-themed music, decorations, and entertainment while enjoying a four course dinner. Dinner selections include a spinach and strawberry salad, mixed grill of chicken and beef or a vegetarian entrée, and a tropical dessert. Iced tea, coffee, and water are included, and a cash bar will be available.

The Society has also been obtaining donations from local businesses, and will have a silent auction as part of the evening's events. Some of the items available for bidding include artwork, a handmade quilt, dinners at local restaurants, a metal detecting treasure hunt, computer repairs, a wedding ceremony, a golf foursome, and more.

The gala will take place at the University of Mary Washington's Seacobeck Hall, 1301 College Avenue in Fredericksburg. Tickets are $85 and available on line at http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/164268 . The event is not child-friendly. The venue is non-smoking and wheelchair accessible, with plenty of on street parking.

Aloha!
