Free Activities and Fun Things to Do in Chicago's Wicker Park

Chicago natives have known the Wicker Park neighborhood as Bucktown since the 1830's, when polish immigrants were notorious for the goats raised there. It was nicked named Bucktown because male goats are called bucks!

Wicker Park or as its referred to in Chicago as Bucktown plays host to a very large concentration of artists and artisans, which have given this area a very eclectic and modern feel as galleries, restaurants and clubs have developed to suit the people who live in this area.

See a Movie

During the summer, Holstein Park hosts free movies starting at Dusk. The movie is provided by the Chicago Park District, but moviegoers are encouraged to bring their own picnic dinner or snacks and beverages. The citywide program is called Movies in the Park and information on dates and movies can be found at the Chicago Park Districts website.

Visit a Gallery

Wicker Park is home to more art galleries and artist than any other part of Chicago. Galleries such as 360SEE and Chicago artist Tony Fitzpatrick's Fire Cat studio are open to the public. Take a Tour

Explore Chicago has put together a fun and adventurous way to learn about Wicker Park neighborhood. The Wicker Park Scavenger Hunt takes visitors on the journey to explore Bucktown's architectural influences, historic park, and various other sites around the neighborhood. By the time the scavenger hunt is completed each hunter will have had visual journey on how Eastern European and Scandinavian immigrants influenced the cultural history of this neighborhood. Game information including maps is provided through Explore Chicago.

Visit the Farmer's Market

Each Sunday during the summer between the hours of 7am to 1 pm, Wicker Park hosts a Farmer's Market. Local farmers and vendors bring fresh produce and meat, pastries, coffee and more into the area of 1425 N. Damen Ave. Afterwards enjoy a nice stroll around the neighborhood and enjoy some of the many murals that have been restored including the one in Mautene Court at 1244-54 North Milwaukee. It is a nice little shaded area to have a quick picnic before heading home.

Getting to Bucktown in Chicago is easy by taking the city's metro system. It has two stops in Wicker Park at the corner of North Damen and North Milwaukee.
