If you live near the sea, one of the ultimate free activities for kids is a day at the beach. Kids love splashing in the water and if you are a swimmer yourself, you can even give them free swimming lessons. Make sure that young children are being supervised at all times and that there is a lifeguard on duty; also, don't forget the sun lotion. There are fun things to do at the beach even if the weather is not very hot; bring a volley ball or any other game that can be played outside and withstand a sea breeze or have fun building sandcastles.
Instead of bringing the kids out to eat at a fast food restaurant, go for a picnic; salads and sandwiches are a great alternative to greasy foods and not only the kids will love the novelty or eating outside but they can also lend a helping hand to food preparation. If you live in a nice country area, combine your picnic with a walking or cycling trip or even a fishing trip. Think of bringing games that you can play outside with the children, like a game of tennis or even a pack of cards and dispose of waste in a bin or take it home with you and bin it there.
National parks that require no entry fees are another fun and free way to spend the day; if you are lucky enough to have one of these in the area where you live, what a nicer day to spend the day than exploring the local flora and fauna? This is a great way to teach children about nature and kids that have had contact with it are more likely to show an interest in science and nature once they get back to school. Don't forget to bring a camera if you want to capture the beauty; the kids may even take up an interest in photography!
Instead of staying home watching television all day on rainy days (we do have those too in the summer!), why not head for your local library? Most libraries have a book section for children with a play area for the little ones and regular trips to the library are a great way to keep children motivated in reading as well as a cheaper alternative to buying new books.
You don't have to spend a lot of money to keep the kids away from that television screen during the summer holidays; explore the area you live in, read the local papers or find out from your local library the places you can visit that are free of charge; create your own entertainment by planning a day trip fishing on a lake, walking or cycling along country roads; there are plenty of free activities for kids to do during summer that are fun for the whole family so take advantage of these for a holiday children and adults alike will love.

Post a CommentFinding "free" activities can be extremely hard to find if you live even a short way from the local town, as we do. Just taking my daughter to a "free" event costs at least $12.00 in gasoline. A trip to the beach this year which is only an hour away will cost close to $60 in gas alone. A day trip to the beach will be our family vacation this year. It is a sad statement on our economy I know.
Thanks for the tips................
Great ideas! I have found that my kids enjoy the simple, inexpensive activities that we do during the summer as much as the bigger, more costly outings - it all comes down to the joy and creativity that you bring with you!
it's hard to find things to do, one other thing we did this summer was join a "playgroup" we get group discounts on tickets, have met new freinds and we take turns "hosting" playtimes so we get to try something new without breaking the bank. but we are lucky here in houston as there are so many free things offered around the city. good ideas you have here!
