Free Attractions in Washington, DC and Budget Friendly Ideas for Dining, Transportation, and Hotels

Kathleen Lynn
The first tip to traveling in Washington, DC on a budget is rent a car. Taxi cabs are very expensive there, I was there for two days and didn't think the expense of car rental was important. From the airport to the hotel was 100.00. That didn't include my business plans in downtown or the return trip to the airport. One ride can make the expense of a car rental valid.

When looking for accommodations, use a website such as Travelocity to find your best deal. Usually, the hotels downtown are expensive. Days Inn, Redroof, and Super 8 are usually the best deals on hotel rates.

For entertainment and attractions, there are many free things you can do that will keep you busy during your stay. The following list is a guide to the free attractions offered

Smithsonian Institute Museums

The White House Visitor Center - If your group isn't big enough to tour the White House, this is the place to stop and visit. It offers coloring sheets and activities for little ones as well as offering up a lot of interesting information about the White House. Some unique photo's and artifacts are also on exhibit here.

The Smithsonian Zoo

Bureau of Engraving and Printing - This is one of the places that would be fun to visit with the family. Especially if you plan ahead and collect some ruined money from friends and family before hand to redeem.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial

Jefferson Memorial

The John F Kennedy Center for Performing Arts - Each evening this theatre company offers one free show that lasts an hour. If you are on a budget but can't resist the allure of culture theatre provides be sure to check this out!

National Theatre - If you are traveling with children, you will want to note that on Saturday mornings this theatre offers free morning programs targeted at a younger audience. Another great taste of culture that anyone can afford!

Old Post Office Pavilion - This offers shopping, window shopping, and dining. The part everyone, even those with a tight budget will love is the great views and looking at the collection of bells. They are renditions of the bells from the bicentennial.

US Navy Memorial and Naval Center

Take an afternoon to stroll downtown. You can take pictures of the white house, view the Vietnam War memorial and other memorials. There are a few national cemeteries in the area as well. There are plenty of sights to see that won't cost you a dime. Utilize those, have fun, and learn on the trip!

For dining you have saved so much money with your hotel, attractions, and not paying for cab services go ahead and splurge. If you are worried about pricing let me share a few locations to check out for good food at a price you can afford.

ESPN Zone - While the burgers may cost more than McDonalds you are getting a unique, one of a kind atmosphere to tell everyone back home about.

Ben's Chili Bowl - If you are hungry for a taste of nostalgia, stop by this diner and have a seat on a stool at a Formica counter. Order up your favorite hotdog topped with chili and enjoy a great meal any budget can afford.

Nice attractions but forget the rental car and use metro. Parking is atrocious, both hard to find and expensive. Those nice free attractions at the Ken Cen for example come with a hefty $16 charge if you park in their garage. You can take metro to Foggy Bottom and ride a free shuttle straight to Ken Cen. Ditto for other major attractions- there is no free parking, limited (and costly) meter parking with meter maids waiting to pounce with a $35 ticket if you overpark even a minute or two, and limited, pricey garage parking.
