When my daughter was a toddler, her favorite show was the Backyardigans. The Backyardigans is a computer animated cartoon that features the imagination driven adventures of a group of diverse animals named Pablo, Tyrone, Uniqua, Tasha, and Austin. Each episode of the features a wonderfully catchy score from a different genre of music (from reggae to country/western) and an adventure that highlights the power of a child's imagination.

According to an interview with one of the Backyardigan's creators, Janice Burgess, the show's themes come from her own love of adventure movies, throwing the characters into various situations ranging from a pirate adventure to a secret agent caper (my family's favorite). The genre for each episode's music, composed by Evan Lurie, is selected from a long list of genres to fit that week's adventures. Backyardigan's elaborate choreography is created with computer animation using actual dancing choreographed for the show.

If your child would like to bring the world of the Backyardigans into your home, or perhaps come up with activites and crafts for a Backyardigans themed party, I suggest these sites featuring printable coloring pages and other craft projects devoted to the Backyardigans.

I adore the Backyardigans. Three of my grandkids are too "old" for them now, but I still have a five-month-old grandson who will indulge me once again! I have bookmarked this for him and my granddaughter, who is four! Thank you!
